- Everspace is not a sim, but an arcade game, and intentinally plays more like a first person shooter than a space sim
- Rolling is not important in this game at all - the buttons on the controller are limited, and rolling is the action probably least required
- Strafing and Hovering on the other hand are incredibly important in this game. You'll need to circle-strafe a lot to evade enemy fire
- While I agree that pressing the thumbstick in order to boost while travelling greater distances can be tedious, a toggle for boost is not really an option. During dogfights you'll want to quickly use your boost for a very short amount of time every now and then in order to evade missiles and enemy fire or get behind an enemy. A toggle would be very confusing in this scenario.

If you could remap the controls to your liking, what would you change the boost to? And where would you put the previous function that the boost would replace?
I've been messing around trying to get a workable gamepad configuration going on PC, but haven't had much success finding an optimal arrangement yet. The game also has a hard time mapping axes correctly, which makes fiddling with the analog stick bindings kind of a pain. And, really, it seems to me that the horrific readability problems in the UI are less of an issue w/ mouse control, so I've got considerably less incentive to find that golden gamepad configuration.
....
The Ace Combat controls would result in something like the following bindings, just in case you're not familiar (using PS button names):
Start: system menu
Select: in-game menu (customization, inventory, etc.)
R1: yaw right
R2: move forward
L1: yaw left
L2: move backward
Circle: fire secondary weapon
Cross: fire primary weapon
Square: change primary weapon
Triangle: target enemy
Left stick X-axis: roll left/right
Left stick Y-axis: move up/down
L3: boost/afterburner
Right stick: camera movement
R3: change view
Would need to have the "crosshairs centered" option ticked to disable the mouse-movement mechanics, which would furhter necessitate many adjustments to control sensitivity because the game wasn't designed to play w/ the crosshairs centered; would also probably require a patch/mod to improve UI readability, as a centered crosshair is going to be harder to spot than one in motion.
....
I should probably try and get my joystick out of my closet, see if it's still working. Possibly Everspace plays better with a joystick than gamepad or mouse? Probably not, but worth a shot.
Switch L3 with L2 you will find peace with this layout.
It happens when you toggle the resolution back and forth. I was playing with it to try and decide whether 4K was noticable or not and it crashes.. No big deal, then I load the game again and the save file was corrupted. I tried the same thing again after deleting the save and it happened twice, so confirmed. If you toggle it too fast it will crash the game.
Not being able to remap boost on PS4 is a critical issue. Holding L3 down for extended times causes significant discomfort. There's pretty significant usability testing across multiple games to support this. The controls are great on PC (yes I own both versions because I love this game and want to play it wherever I am) because you can remap boost to L2 or some other button. I agree a toggle has conflicts during dog fighting but having the option to set it to toggle would be preferable in the absence of a remapping. Most games that have sprint on L3/R3 use a toggle. Its not too difficult to toggle on and off quickly if you need a short boost. I've had to stop playing it on PS4 because of this one control issue and I have heard similar feedback from other players.
