Some solutions posted in this forum will tell you to run Gothic II as an administrator and to use compatibilty mode with Windows XP - SP3.
SInce the problem lies squarely with the Steam, none of this is going to solve this problem.
Download a patch from the now closed Gothic Website in Germany... This patch is for version 2.6 of the game. The Steam version of Gothic II English is 2.7.
Well, this patch may well work for you, it didn't work for me.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Gothic II\system\
But, basically, the compatibility problem will have been solved...
Delete "GameOverlayRenderer.dll" from Steam folder while Steam is running. Then start the game.
The deleted file returns when Steam is restarted. You will need to delete it whenever Steam restarts before you can play the game.
This works for Gothic and Gothic2.
Inside C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam folder.
Now let's hope i don't get my saves ironicaly deleted by forgetting to delete the file, thanks.
It may end up being the best $2 you ever spent. Good to see that it worked for you.
