Sorry for asking, to which issue are you exactly referring, too? The Access Violation one?
Oh my apologies, I was too lazy to check the numerous pages of comments so I never noticed the topic has changed. :-O
My issue was, that after a certain point my saves of Gothic 1 got corrupted and trying to load them sometimes resulted in an Access Violation crash. The first time this happened was, when I enabled Marvin to take control of a Templar so as to take their armor. When I saved without Marvin turned on, the saves weren't corrupted, so I assumed that was what caused it, but I was wrong.
I then made my way to the Old Camp castle (which is possible at night, you just need to KO the guards) and got access violations there as well, so I reloaded a previous save, only to find they resumed when I KO'd a Shadow, so either he had glitch protection, or stealing from him made my inv too full, so I emptied my inv into the Nameless Ones chest in his hut by the arena and tried to save in conditions which until now always triggered an Access Violation crash, but so far it didn't happen.
And why am I telling you this? Well because you are right - specifics make all the difference. :-)
Happy gaming to wherever your fancy takes you! ^^
Hahaha, word! Thanks for clarifying. xD
just google it, there is a pretty good documentation directly from microsoft.
So ill try to keep it short (but it needs some context). So i installed the SystemPack, the PlayerKit and the Rev-fix or whatever. And my game actually runs smooth and it runs fine. No errors whatsoever.
I can exit the game, and start it up again and thats all good aswell.
So you might ask, then what is the issue, well the issue is that as soon as i re-start my PC, or like when i have to go to sleep i turn off my PC and turn it back on. Thats when the problems start.
I tried every fix in the book, i tried running it on Windows7/8 and XP and it doesnt do anything. I tried renaming the files. I tried running it without Steam overlay. Nothing helps. I tried everything.
So the issue itself is not a ``Access violation`` But its a ``Assertion Failed`` And it reads : Illegal number of provider found. There has to be atleast one M3D provider in the System directory.
And i have searched all the way back to the earliest days of G2`s release, and i cannot find what this file is, let alone how to fix it.
So that is my question really. How on earth is a M3D provider, and how on earth do i fix this issue.
Right now i have to uninstall G2/NotR and then re-install it again, then re-install the rev-fix and the SystemPack and all, and then it works fine again. But i really dont wanna go through all that just to play for a few hours.
That sounds very wild, never had this before so sorry in advance if i can't help. But to answer *whats an M3D Provider*, it seems to have something to do with sound.
To Quote a German Gothic Forum:
"Gothic copies the set sound provider (.M3D) from [gothic]\Miles to [gothic]\System at startup. The error message says that there is no sound provider in the system directory at initialization. This can have several reasons:
- [gothic]\Miles does not exist or contains the wrong files
- the file cannot be copied from [gothic]\Miles to [gothic]\System
(no idea why this should happen - access rights, write protection, ...?)
- [gothic]\Miles contains incompatible providers (to Gothic2.exe)"
Sadly his solution to fix that problem was to reinstall the game... but this is a thing you already did... Do you have maybe an option to install the game on another HDD?
If it helps, this is how my "Miles" folder looks like, vanilla Gothic 2 Gold Edition.

... There was an strange Bug with "ArcaniA" .. when you had an too high bitrate on your speakers... quality... it did crashed on start... Maaaaybe thats a thing to check out?
Another thing that comes to my mind... If i remember correct, with all the patches installed the game ... asks you lowkey what kind of Gothic you wanna run, like in some sort of menu. Does that happen on your side too? Because if not, maybe thats the thing that you start it wrong or forgot to install *something*. Alltho its very wierd that it runs the first time...
Another Forum post says:
Turns out the registry cleaner I have has been deleting some entries related to directsound.
Maybe an Antivirus programm of yours is having an rampage?
The last thing i could think of right now, altho this also sounds unlikely because it runs in the first place... is your source for the patches maybe faulty? I highly recommend the WorldOfGothic Forum for such downloads, but as i was trying to get the link i noticed the english version of the Website don't have any downloads :/ So i can only provide you the German one but Lé Google should be able to help out... hopefully

Another Person's solution was to Install DirectX_Jun2010_Redist.exe (http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/4/A/84A35BF1-DAFE-4AE8-82AF-AD2AE20B6B14/directx_Jun2010_redist.exe) ... But this *shouldnt* be the fix for your problem since the problems start when you restart your computer but.. i dont know why not trying
Hey, thanks for the reply. This does help a bit, but it also leads to more questions aswell.
So i looked and i have those exact 6 M3D files in my ``Miles`` folder. I Also do have a M3D file in the ``System`` folder.
About the re-install of the game. I have been doing it where my Steam folder is, so thats on my D drive, not C. I dont see how that would fix anything. Also i did check my virus scanner, and i could not find anything that would make me think it would be blocking it. But i only took a brief look at it. When i get more time ill investigate that further just to be sure.
I also did download them from the worldofgothic site. And first i couldnt get the english ones, but then somehow they showed up randomly and that solved that atleast.
Also yeah i do get the prompt to play G2, or the NotR version. And i do just play the NotR version only.
I do still have to try the DirectX_Jun2010_Redist.exe... but i also do not believe that would fix it. Im still gonna check that out aswell when i get more time.
But since i have the exact same 6 M3D files in the ``Miles`` folder, and i do also have one in the ``System`` folder... i dont understand if i have the files, that it would give me an error message to do with those files. Since those files are there. I mean if i didnt have the files i could see the issue being there. But i have those exact same 6 files. And i do also have them in the ``System`` folder.... So that does leave me even more confused how this error exists. But i do appreciate the quick reply. I really thought it was doomed cause i dont see much, if any people relating to this exact issue. But yeah i will try to do the other things i hope later today when i have the time for it. And atleast i can start excluding things to what the problem could be. I guess its the only way to really figure what or how this issue exists. Its just strange that since i do have the right M3D files, that this issue exists at all.
you also can try it via "spine"
install the "original" here on steam and use "spine" for the patches
good luck and a happy new year.
