Assertion Failed (Application error - Access violation)

Yesterday everything was working dandy finde, but today when I try to load a save or start a new game a window appears with the title Assertion Failed and the message:
An error description has been copied to the clipboard.
Any ideas how to solve this?

How fix Access Violation : Control Panel > Programs > Run programs made for previous version of Windows > Next > Click on "Not Listed" > C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Gothic II\system click on Gothic II and click on OPEN > Next > Try recommended settings > Windows XP ( SP 3 ) click on Start Test > Next > Save > DONE!

Access Violation!

I just bought this yesterday. Running windows 7, tried most of the fixes- still get the damn crash halfway through the loading screen after selecting a new game. I sincerely hope steam sorts this out as a WHOLE LOT of us want to play this game again.

Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam (or where ever you installed Steam), delete GameOverlayRenderer.dll (It won't harm your Steam, it only loads the Steam Overlay, as soon as you restart Steam, Steam will "see" that the .dll is gone and will replace it... or you put it back into the folder manually^^)

In Deutsch:
Geht in den Ordner C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam (Oder wo auch immer ihr Steam installiert habt) und löscht die GameOverlayRenderer.dll. (Es wird Steam nicht schaden da diese .dll lediglich das Overlay lädt, sobald man Steam neustartet sollte Steam bemerken, dass diese .dll fehlt und sie ersetzen... oder ihr packt die .dll halt wieder in den Ordner^^)

Or you could disable it through Steam settings...

SuperQuail yes and no. Somehow this didnt helped me circa 2 months ago and I've randomly read that i should delete the .dll... and voilá, it worked then^^

Interesting... getting this game to work is highly idiosyncratic. It's different for just about everyone.

Yeah the game has his own mind. It don't like "standard" problem fixes. It want difficult problem fixes :) Btw. don't install the Patch. The latest Patch sucks. You can't do funny jumps anymore, the birds in the forest sounds like cancer you can't even climb normaly! You have to cheat to complete the game because the char can't climb up important crags (Also you can't find Gilbert ;) ).

Guess i will have to do with playing Gothic 3 ,Gothic 1 also does not work.
I managed to start game with patch ,but without voices and subtitles .Other things no go

da einen deutschen namen hast antworte ich auch mal in deutsch ^^ hatte das selbe häufig hilft es die steam community bei gothic 2 zu deaktivieren oder in den steam ordner gehen zu gothic 2 und dort die .exe datei einstellen das sie als administrator ausgeführt wird.

English: mostly it helps to deactivate the steam community from gothic 2 or run the .exe data always as administrator. sorry for my bad english ^^`

Hello my Friends, I'll help you for this today.
Here's a Tutorial to fix it:

1. Install "Gothic-2: NoTR; GOLD".

2. Install Report 2.6.0.0-rev2 ( DL LINK: Report 2.6.0.0-rev2[dl1.worldofplayers.ru] )

3. Install GothicStarter ver.2.6f ( DL LINK: GothicStarter ver.2.6f[www.bendlins.de] )

4. Install SystemPack-1.1
G2NoTR-SystemPack-1.1.exe * ( DL LINK: G2-NoTR-SystemPack-1.1[dl1.worldofplayers.ru] )

5. Play.

This worked for me:

If you have Gothic 2 installed --> reinstall it over steam.

Start the Game out of Steam.

If you get the access violation error with "gameoverlayrenderer.dll" go to the steam library and delete all gamoverlayrenderer.dll's.

Now start the game again.

This was the only thing that worked for me.

PS: You have to delete it again when you update your steam.

If you remove the overlay render .dll's you can start it in Steam :) Btw. you need to delete it every Time you re-start Steam since the .dll's are a part of Steam and steam detect that they are missing if you restart Steam.
