So you dont just stumble over everything and get everything just for nose picking. You have to earn everything. And by earn I mean you have to listen carefully, have to read your quest journal carefully and you have to think about it. They made quests which sound ridiculously hard but are instead totally easy if you have just listened to every word. Other quests sound easy but are ridiculously hard if you never played gothic before.
Also Gothic was not made so you get everything in your first playthrough. The game is made so you play multiple times. I played it more than 50 times and I still find new things. This only goes if you dont read up tipps and tricks of course.
About the debt book. Since there is a dialogue about it why are you upset? Also if you just read the debt book it pretty obvious you give it to one of the people in it. Besides that you get a dialogue option as soon as you have the book in your inventory.
In addition there is a 3rd option how to learn pick locks but you have to do quest(s) for it.
My opinion is that this is a flaw in the scripts. I see this logic: Either Matteo still give the task (collect Gritta's debt) OR Torben no longer needs trust OR Torben (or someone else) gives a clue regarding his debts to Lehmar. The last option is not very suitable at all. Because it becomes clear from a conversation with Thorben that he is a pious person. A devout person will certainly like violence in any form, robbery, etc? The first option is more preferable since the main character is already familiar with the artisans and therefore Matteo can simply ask for a favor. Then it would make sense.
Anyway if you are playing vanilla g2 there is only 1 chest with good loot in it so you havent missed much
Vanilla g2 is not available on steam, unless you count the mod that changes a ton of stuff and is so far removed from vanilla it shouldn't be called that.
In the base version (gold) that is available on steam there is a ton of good loot in chests, namely the stone tablets that can return the cost of lockipicking a hundredfold depending on when you use them and how much you minmax.
They added the option to play Vanilla G2 instead of NotR a while ago. 20 years too late, but still.
It launches the mod that tries to turn notr into vanilla and changes a ton of stuff for no good reason, not the original gothic 2.
