Gothic II: Gold Classic

How do I play pure mage?
Is this even possible? There is no mana regen, the spells kinda suck and even later in game(3rd chapter), how are you supposed to finish 2-3 dragon snappers before they get to you, it's not like there's always something to climb on or not like some monsters can't climp up as well.
As a warrior I could finish them with no problem.

Also being constantino apprentice suck, because you need the mushrooms for mana, if you sell it to him it wil disappear forever, shame because Alchemist really suits Mage character, but seems like it's not wort it.

Going pure mage, with no weapon use, is very hard. If you're looking to NEVER use a weapon you're going to need to seriously micromanage your mana recovery items and stat growth potion making.

And abuse summons.

I've probably played through the game (off of steam) like a dozen times and my mage runs always end up with reasonably high weapon skills.

Edit: this is mostly directed at the first two games, and potion making is not in G1

I spent all of my points on magic, only 10 for lock picking and 1 for small mana potion.
I can literally kill everything with 10 str and a stick, beaten like 80* of monster in the first chapter, and the problem is that I just can't resist doing it when magic does so crappy damage and having only so much mana potions without mana regen leaves me no choice.

There's no doubt that mana management and the lack of recovery items is a pain in the ass, but if you're using the latest runes you can get a hold of and supplementing that with a summon or two when you need to you really shouldn't be having that much of a problem. Save the majority of your spells for real fights, don't blow all your mana on a pack of wolves or some skeletons. I feel like mages win most of their fights by softening things up with magic and then finishing it with melee.

Magic in G2 is pretty great, especially compared to G1. It starts off weak but once you're chucking lightning and greater fireball everywhere you wreck house, but even still I would definitely recommend some melee skill ups.
It shouldn't be too hard, but probably not an option for first timers, since you need good knowledge of all the permanent bonus options in the game.

Alternatively, jump to Gothic 3 where you can learn Mana regeneration.

I the goblin summon is very effective, thing is good chunk of the game would turn into walking simulator, it's not satisfying because I'm not the one fighting.
This situation could be a lot better if we had a cheaper(requiring less mana per cast) spell for weak animal shredding.

With the thing that you have to spend a lot of SP on runes, there is no place for experimenting and you just really have to know what runes you want use, which not only makes pure mage more impossible, but also makes it less fun by restricting his arsenal. Imagine having the game taking away all the swords from merchants, and only way to obtain better weapons is to spend points on how to make a particular sword yourself, instead of getting better at fighting.

I was the first timer 13 years ago, played many times as mage with sword support, just now trying to do a pure mage.

I don't really think this game was made with such playstyle in mind.

You can play it. When you go to jarkendar you can buy endless amounts of alcohol from Samuel which recovers mana.

You can use mage staff I don't know it is called I never played gothic in english. You can buy it from Gorax or Isgaroth I think. This staff that adds 20 mana when you equip it. Make spell summon skeleton goblin. It costs 20 mana.

How to cast free goblin spell:
Equip staff
Summon Goblin
Re-equip staff
Cast again

This works only for spells which costs 20 or less mana

Why would you completely ignore melee combat? You get enough skill bonuses for free.
Else I've had a lot of fun with Ice Lance - one of the extra spells from the water mages:

If you're fine with using the console you can actually add mana-regeneration in the charedit-menu. Be very careful with the numbers though. Setting it to 1 is reasonable. It's a bit op in the early game that way, but with a very large mana-pool it will feel like nothing.
