Anyway, there are some reasons exists, since Constantino buys all types of mushrooms, and you only need one to boost your mana. So, just eat small mushrooms and sell big mushrooms. Still better than learning smithing or furs as mage (but not as much rewarding, for sure).
You can learn from Constantino even if you don't join him, if you know how to brew potions and you are a citizen of Khorinis.
People usually choose him as a mage and other castes, because he doesn't require the player to spend LP to earn money and you can learn alchemy from him, which is valuable. Constantino is usually a newbie choice (I was also picking him when I was beginner, but later I found out that Bosper is the most profitable). Shortly they usually save that 5 LP for other purposes, but that 5 LP is irrelevant later in the game. You will need to learn to gut animals as a mage anyway, because late game runes require ingredients, which are really hard to come by (Demon's Heart,Tongue of Fire); and because late game spells barely have any scrolls (as far as I know, the spell Wave of Death has like 2-3 scrolls in the entire game) you are bound to make those runes, if you plan to use them.
