Can loot be sold for its real value?

I have a few items like silver rings and silver chalices, but they sell for only about 10-20 gold. Yet their buyback value is several hundred gold. Is there a way to get more gold for items like this?

If you decide to not rat Halvor out to the city militia you can sell him silver plates and chalices for 50 gold pieces each. Everything else you just sell to the merchants for 1/5 of their value.

Thanks. I've yet to encounter a quest where I can turn in Halvor, but I'll keep an eye out for it.
