Alawar is known for their amazingly made HOGs, one of the best developers out there for this genre. This game is one of their best, aside from some of the minor flaws I'm going to mention in this review. The story is about a doctor who received a phone call from a patient who currently resides in a hotel. Once he arrived at the luxury hotel, he found it completely empty and to his surprise, the phone was ringing in his patient room, and when he answered it, someone told him 'The game has begun' After that call, the doctor heard a scream outside. He has to discover the mystery of this hotel.

The artwork and details of the scenes are amazing, but once again, nothing is completely perfect as the characters design and their animation are pretty on the low-quality side. This game has lots of puzzles to solve, they vary in difficulty. You also get to choose what to answer the characters.

The hidden objects scenes are not like the usually listed ones You'll start the scene and they'll show you an object that you need to collect other items for it to be completed. For example, if the doctor wanted to take his bag, he needs to fill it up with the items he is going to use. They'll show you the items you need to find in the scene. And if you need to fix the water tap you need to collect those objects which will help you to fix it.

I liked the journal a lot, it gives lots of information and the design is really beautiful. Sadly there is no fast traveling map, and you'll have to backtrack a little, fortunately, that this game is designed in sections, once you finish a section you'll move to the other one and there is no need to go back to the first place you arrived to.

Voice overs are very weak in this game along with the character's animation. You can disable the voices it in the options but you can't do anything regarding the animations. The game is playable and enjoyable for Hidden Objects lovers.

One of your patients is having an heavy health problem and you have to go to the White Wolf Hotel in order to save him. However, he's not here but the clients, all invited for the inauguration, are attacked one by one and killed. Everyone seems to be tied to an old fire that killed two children when the building was still a house for kids.... So why are you there?

I must admit that I played the game in the Hidden Objects Bundle 5 in 1, that lazy as I am, I've not reviewed. Activating this game was part of making a better review of it as an stand-alone than a quick one for the bundle, because of the character limit. The trading cards are a bonus added later and so I replayed the game for them.

Now, with memory refreshed, I remembered why I liked it, though the core gameplay isn't my favorite. Indeed, at first sight, you think that it's about two different stories: the death of Bill Wilton, a benefactor for the hospice, and the death of two children years later. In reality, everything is tied and everyone reunited, save for you as you had no influence in that fateful day, played a part directly or indirectly. The ending however is a huge twist.

The core gameplay is a scene with an object to rebuild and with the parts to find in it. It's not my favorite though, as some objects are hidden by the hud itself and that others are sometimes not in the same position as shown. You have also to solve puzzles to advance. While the map is useful to see where to go, it can't be used to travel, which is sad.

The backgrounds are good too, though you may ask yourself why there is a ski resort behind an old child hospice. It's making sense in the story. You'll also see that the hotel is renovated in only the parts used by the guest, the rest is left like that after the failure of the resort.

The soundtrack is good too though it's not too much present.

Anyway, Mountain Crime: Requital is a nice game, I wish that I could see more of the story but hey, it has enough suspens for a sequel too. Maybe it's existing out there.

Hello, hello! We are together for a review of another HOG again! How marvelously different and interesting, is it? No, of course it isn't. This is our millionth HOG, and after a while they all end up resembling one another. Still, Mountain Crime: Requital is one of the better ones out there, with an interesting enough scenario to establish a sense of curiosity.

We here have Dr. Philip White, who receives an urgent phone call in the middle of the night, which asks him to attend a patient at the White Wolf Mountain Resort, in a really bad storm. As any self-confident wise guy with no common sense spared, he travels to middle of nowhere to attend said patient, only to find a murder-mystery. All communication and transportation is cut off, hotel guests are dropping like flies and there is a sick bastard on the loose who treats all this chaos as an elaborate game. It seems that everything is connected to a bigger crime buried in the past. "But what crime?" asks Dr. Philip White, and starts his investigation like any Scooby Doo wannabe.

Cute, huh? Don't be deceived by my mockery. Our protagonist is a naive sod, but the story itself and the connection between hotel guests are a mystery worthy of uncovering. As for the game itself, graphics are pretty good. Background design is interesting and there are many, many lockboxes, automatons and hidden doors around. If I'd visit this hotel in real life - without a murder-mystery present, of course - I know I'd love to spare a week or two there. Character animations look pretty until they start talking. Then with the tongue-tied voice acting and clumsy lip synch, the atmosphere crumbles. It's like a really fine looking lady with no smarts. You'd love to look her all day, as long as she doesn't talk.

Puzzles, I hear? Oh, they are good. There is a balanced combination of ordinary ones, and 'just annoying enough to stall you off until you were about to give up' ones. HOG scenes are very neat, with open and distinguishable items, with more than only one item of the kind lying around. Each HOG is designed to gather pieces for a machine of sort that you're trying to fix, so you can reach another item of use. This way, items laid around kinda make sense, which is rare in this genre.

All in all, this is a fine HOG, but I'll attach a warning. This game is included in a Hidden Object Bundle 5 in 1 in Steam, so if you have the bundle already, there is no actual need for you to buy this game. You already have the game within the bundle. If you don't have it and are even mildly curious, go ahead. Gonna end up with 3-4 hours of decent HOG fun. With this said, my work here is done! Good gaming!

Mountain Crime’s repetitive nature and terrible voice acting hides a good idea of a murder mystery. If there were more puzzles and if the hidden object scenes would last more than 30 seconds, it could have been a really memorable hidden object game.

In a secluded resort, the seemingly colourful cast of visitors slowly get killed one by one. But as our investigating protagonist gets to the bottom of the crimes, he learns that these victims are actually connected by a very old, heinous crime.
Or, in other words, Mountain Crime: Requital is essentially a hidden object reimagination of Agatha Christie’s famous novel, ‘Ten Little ♥♥♥gers’ (nowadays usually called ‘And Then There Were None’), only with horrible voice acting and a rather half-hearted and lazy ending.

Still, for the most part, the game is somewhat enjoyable. The puzzles are really fun and even the silhouette-based hidden object scenes are decent. But they are few and far in-between, as most of the time is spent by endless backtracking—which, without a quick travel feature, makes the game boring way too fast.

Mountain Crime: Requital is the first 'hidden objects game' I played. I'm very familiar with the 'point & click adventure' genre but the idea of hidden objects never appealed to me because it sounds like a pixel hunt.

I have to say Mountain Crime: Requital mostly plays like a point & click adventure game: you collect items and use those on items in the game world to advance the story. Occasionally, you'll get a 'hidden object' screen in which you need to find some items but they're always hidden in plain sight, so there's no pixel hunting involved. Even then, there is a hint button. If you really can't spot that last object on the screen, it'll point it out for you.

The story is a basic detective story. You're a doctor who's called to a hotel to examine a patient but when you get there, it's clear a murderer is on the loose. So you start an investigation by examining the hotel, its residents and its surroundings.

I liked the setting, the mystery and the way the problem-solving needed to be tackled. The solution to advance the plot is always logical if you think about it. There are some puzzles to be solved, too. At first these are very easy, but in the second half of the game they can be pretty challenging.

You're never stuck in this game: if you don't know where to go or what to do next, you can click the hint button. If you can't solve a puzzle, you can just skip it. In both cases, there is a time restraint: after clicking the hint button, it needs to 'recharge' before it can be used again, and it takes some time before you can skip a puzzle, so in both cases the game does encourage you to try before giving up.

Without using spoilers, the story turns out to be a pretty basic detective story but it's interesting enough to want to discover what's going on. On the other hand, the 'personal story' of the main character turned out to be very cliché and became pretty predictable towards the end.

All in all, Mountain Crime: Requital was a positive experience of about 4 to 5 hours. It certainly isn't a mind-blowing, life-changing experience but it is worth its price. If it's on sale, I think you shouldn't even doubt and buy the game if you're into 'point & click adventure' games. I'm not sure if it's a good 'hidden objects' game because the hidden objects scenes were quite easy and because I can't compare it to other hidden objects games.

Not a bad game. Graphics are outdated and the mini game controls are a bit wonky. But for the price of $5 it's a good game to get. I remember playing this game a long time ago actually. There is a map that shows you where you have stuff still to do but no fast travel.

I don't know if they ever did a follow up to this game as it leaves you hanging a bit at the end wanting to know what happened next.

A murder mystery written like an early Agatha Christie novel, presented like an Alfred Hitchcock movie, with the solvability (and continuity) of an Ellery Queen mystery. Engaging, intriguing, heart pounding. Keeps the gamer enthralled and guessing until the end. I felt like I had read a thrilling murder mystery without actually any reading involved. Excellent pacing with just enough time to almost catch your breath.

Storyline: Dr. Philip White (one dark and dangerously stormy night) is called to the newly renovated White Wolf Hotel to examine and attend to a Mr. Grey. When he arrives, the bridge washes out leaving him stranded. He discovers there is no Mr. Grey and a hotel filled with other guests also invited to this grand opening by Mr. Grey. (And Then There Were None ~ Agatha Christie, anyone? And no that is not a spoiler.) The mystery begins when the body count begins. Who is Mr Grey? Does he even exist? Why are these people here, unknown to each other yet have a connection? What is that connection? And why this requital? As the body count rises, the answers are revealed.

Gameplay: Hidden Object puzzler with point and click elements. The hidden object scenes instead of being find lists, are picture finds (somewhat like a silhouette). The HO scene opens and small pictures form a circle of the things or pieces needed to be found. Not as easy as it sounds since the objects needed to be found blend into the surrounding objects (which are appropriate for where the scene is). For example looking for desk items, on a desk covered with items typically found on a desk. Also there are generally several of the same item and like a matching game the gamer needs to pick the correct one.

Puzzles: Sliders and logic, or maybe better stated: logic sliders. For example the typical moving of X number of one color object to the opposite side of a board/grid while the x number on that side are moved to where the other color is. Typically found on locks. Also there is the finding of keys, which are usually found behind some type of logic slider puzzle.

The Point and Click element is just as important to the story and in true point and click fashion there are plenty of puzzling obstacles to overcome. However this element is so intermixed with the Hidden Object aspect it is hard to tell the two apart.

Note: No map (not needed), no penalties for game hints or puzzle skips. No achievements but trading cards for those who care about those things.

Conclusion: Enthralling and believable murder mystery, and like all excellent murder mysteries when the pieces start to fall into place, it is an avalanche. Definitely worth full price.

In a nutshell: Don't go out of your way for this one. Even if you got it in a bundle, don't bother. It's boring, predictable, oddly-paced, and leaves much to be desired on many levels. And while I've certainly played much worse, the cons heavily outweigh the pros here, and it's just not worth wasting 3 hours of your time.

Don't get me wrong, the game is not a 100% farm-fresh steaming pile. It sports some great background art, and a couple of game mechanics I haven't seen in HOPAs before (or since, considering the game is over 5 years old now), which would normally be a good thing. But they were ultimately too underwhelming in practice to be redeeming.

I was actually looking forward to playing this, too. But after a mere 15 minutes I was bored out of my mind and wondering how long it would take to complete, and if it would get any better or more interesting. It didn't.

You're a doctor who gets invited to a shady hotel in the middle of nowhere to treat a patient. But after the road washes out and traps you there along with other guests, the game dives face-first into a shabby murder mystery plot that felt less like an interesting story hook and more like like someone decided it'd be a cool idea to throw together out-of-context ideas from a few Stephen King novels, elements of Identity, and characters that may as well have been ripped from a bad Agatha Christie fanfic - topped off with a predictably weak "80's soap opera" style twist. The actual story that emerges from such an unholy union somehow manages to be mildly creepy enough to raise an eyebrow at, but it falls apart very quickly - in large part because of the writing.

The dialogue and item/scene flavor text are laughably dense, sprinkled with gems like "I prefer my freedom, but I'll take a cup of tea", or "I need to unlock this door" when looking at a suitcase. The protagonist is also kind of an idiot. You can practically hear the "WHOOSH" sound as clues and glaringly-obvious deductions fly over his head. None of the other characters are remotely likeable either, nor do you ever learn enough about any of them to care.

The overarching plot that our bumbling hero finally pieces together...well there are enough threads lying around to build a decent story, but the game doesn't package or sell it well. Sure, the 'mystery' is unravelled (even though you could call it from a mile away), but there simply isn't enough to tie all the people and story snippets together without resorting to a Deus Ex Sherlock "I figured it out, this is what was going on all along" monologue at the end. The abruptness of the ending also doesn't help. I could overlook that if it at least played out as if there might be a sequel, but it doesn't. The scene following the Sherlock speech is strangely bittersweet (I give it points for the sheer level of irony), but just when it seems like it could get interesting, BAM, credits. No wrap-up narration/closure. I guess the weird conversation at the end was supposed to function as one.

Ok, enough about story.

I wish I could say that the hidden object scenes make up for the game's other weak points, but sadly they don't. I'll start with what they do right though.
+ Objects and clutter fit the scenes, and are things you'd expect to find in those areas, albeit placed a bit haphazardly.
+ Objects are smartly hidden. You're not given much to find, but some of it actually presents a bit of a challenge.
+ Multiple valid versions of objects. If you need to find a screw for instance, there may be 3 or 4 screws in the scene. In most HOPAs, you'd be expected to match the exact silhouette, or pick the one that's "most screwlike" (more common for mistranslated stuff). But here, any one of them would be fine to use. Two completely different-looking ties? Either one would count for the one tie you're supposed to find, even if it doesn't match the silhouette. It's basically adding more fitting clutter objects without being a troll about specifics.

But:
- Every scene has only 8 related objects to find (e.g. parts for a lawn mower)
- The 'lists' are not in text form, or even silhouette. Just grayscale versions of the items.
- All scenes are revisited at least once, some up to 3x over the course of the game

Seems like a short list, but the 8-items-only thing is a serious bummer. There's so much potential in the art style and background detail, and it's wasted in the name of making the scene as relevant as possible. That's a good thing when it comes to staying on track, but those silly lists are the reason why we play these games in the first place. Even if 75% of the items are totally nonsensical for what the protagonist needs, it's the hunting part that draws people. What fun is a "hidden object" game if it actively aims for as few hidden objects as possible?

Puzzles were far too easy. I solved several of them completely by accident, and only one or two required any thought. The puzzle window also poofs the second you enter the last move/digit/etc, so for some of them I didn't even know what I had accidentally gotten right. I also usually like to get a mental picture of the solution, so it was annoying to not even have enough time to hit the screenshot key (really, it's that fast). But that's a more personal nitpick.

I haven't laughed so much at the way characters move through scenes in a long time. Picture someone making a stop-motion walking animation using Barbie and Ken dolls (up to and including stiff limbs and Ken's abnormally wide shoulders), and you get the idea. (Okay fine, they're a BIT more fluid than that, but honestly not by much.) People also slide around the floor as they walk, tilt oddly when gesturing or holding things, and generally look like they're about to tip over.
I've also never seen such a jarring discrepancy in scale between actors and background. For instance, when the sheriff does his Ken-waddle into a room and stops near a pair of women's high heels, it shouldn't look like he could easily fit both feet into one and still have room for a small puppy. Character scale, perspective, and angles are so ridiculously wonky in front of such meticulously detailed backgrounds that it feels like a mashup of completely different games.

Unremarkable at best, grating at worst. There are a few spots in the game where there's a short loop of audio that I'm guessing is supposed to simulate things like outdoor critters, workshop noise, or whatever ambiance they were going for. But it gets annoying very fast when the clip is barely a few seconds long and on infinite replay.
Some SFX didn't seem to match their origin, and sounded weird or 'off'. Similar issue with the music. It tried to be suspenseful in some really strange places when nothing was going on. I ended up turning it off because the combined dissonance was starting to irk me.
Voiceovers were..ok I guess. Nothing bad, but nothing that stood out. Though it did add to the funny factor when characters were speaking AND moving ridiculously at the same time.

I'd say Mountain Crime comes off as a decent effort at producing a HOPA that at the very least takes itself seriously enough to keep everything as relevant as possible to the story they came up with. Most games at the lower quality end of the genre can barely boast a storyline, let alone a coherent one. So I give the devs props for that. The backgrounds are lovely (seriously guys, keep that artist on your payroll), and I'd love to see some of the more unique gameplay features of this title expanded on in the future.

But ultimately I would not say this game was 3+ hours of my time well spent. I was bored after 15 mins, and remained bored till the end.

The Weather is bad, but what a good Doctor cannot be deterred from answering a Patient's call. But the Storm cut off your way back to Civilization as Jack. You will quickly find out: Your Patient is already dead, but not by natural circumstances. More deaths follow, but you can only slowly find out what exactly is going on. And worse, you're somehow involved.

A Hidden object puzzle Adventure awaits you, the Story of which is not immediately obvious. You will work it out through numerous Notes that you will find along the Way. And the People you come into contact with, whether alive or dead, provide further Information. In Addition, there are of course many Objects to be found and Puzzles to be solved. At the beginning you decide for yourself whether interesting spots are displayed with glitter by selecting the Mode.

Hidden object scenes do not come with a usual search list. There is a lot lying around in the Scenes, some against the Rules of Gravity, but instead of the search list there is a single Container in which the five or six Objects that you have to find are shown to you by outline. If you put all of them in the Container, it becomes an object that helps you to find your actual inventory Object. Whether you are using the Container to repair a Water tap that then runs and floats something you need or whether you bring a light into a corner, your Actions are always Goal-oriented and you won't find yourself looking for a Screwdriver beforehand with 20 Rubber ducks and clothespins and collect similar rubbish.

The Puzzles are varied and colorfully mixed, both in type and in claim. There is something for everyone, all of them can be skipped and they are well incorporated into the respective game play. The Explanations are sufficient and both beginners and connoisseurs will get their Money's worth here. What is particularly noticeable: Here no Codes are hidden in inexplicable Places: If something has to be opened, then the Solution is usually traceable and not through a Code that was hidden in the Kitchen oven or for which you would otherwise have to perform an illogical Action .

The Hint offers you help in the search Scenes, it shows you outside where there is something to do; shows if necessary which Inventory object can be used where and if there is nothing to do or to find, it will show the Direction that you have to take next. At the same Time there is still the Book. As soon as you have found the map, you will be able to see exactly where you are and where an Action is possible. You have to run yourself, the Map is not clickable, but the Paths are not so endless and although you have to achieve quite a bit of mileage: You don't get the feeling that this is only happening to buy Time.

Mountain Crime Requital ist ein Wimmelbild - Krimi, welcher von Alawar Stargaze entwickelt wurde.


Das Wetter ist schlecht, aber was ein guter Arzt ist, der lässt sich nicht abhalten, dem Ruf eines Patienten zu folgen. Doch durch das Unwetter wird dir als Jack der Weg zurück in die Zivilisation abgeschnitten. Schnell findest du heraus: Dein Patient ist bereits tot, aber nicht durch natürliche Umstände. Weitere Tote folgen, doch was genau abläuft findest du nur langsam heraus. Und schlimmer noch: Irgendwie bist du in die Sache involviert.

Dich erwartet ein Wimmelbild-Puzzle-Abenteuer, dessen Geschichte nicht sofort offensichtlich ist. Du wirst sie dir erarbeiten, durch zahlreiche Notizen, die du auf dem Weg findest. Und auch die Personen, mit denen du es zu tun bekommst, ob lebend oder tot, geben weiteren Aufschluss. Daneben gibt es natürlich viele Gegenstände zu finden und Puzzle zu lösen. Ob interessante Stellen per Glitzern angezeigt werden, entscheidest du selber zu Beginn durch die Modus-Auswahl.

Wimmelbildszenen kommen nicht mit einer üblichen Suchliste einher. Zwar liegt vieles in den Szenen herum, manches auch eher gegen die Regeln der Schwerkraft, aber statt der Suchliste gibt es einen einzelnen Container in dem dir per Umriss die fünf oder sechs Gegenstände angezeigt werden, die du zu finden hast. Legst du alle in den Container wird dieser zu einem Objekt, der dir hilft, dein eigentliches Inventarobjekt zu finden. Ob du nun mit dem Container einen Wasserhahn reparierst, der dann läuft und etwas, was du brauchst, aufschwemmt oder ob du Licht in eine Ecke bringst, immer sind deine Handlungen zielorientiert und auf der Suche nach einem Schraubenzieher wirst du nicht vorher 20 Gummientchen, Wäscheklammern und ähnlichen Müll einsammeln müssen.

Die Puzzle sind vielfältig und bunt gemischt, sowohl in der Art als auch im Anspruch. Es ist für jeden etwas dabei, alle können übersprungen werden und sie sind gut in den jeweiligen Spielverlauf eingearbeitet. Die Erklärungen sind ausreichend und sowohl Anfänger als auch Kenner werden hier auf ihre Kosten kommen. Was besonders auffällt: Hier werden keine Codes an unerklärlichen Stellen versteckt: Wenn etwas geöffnet werden muss, dann ist die Lösung in der Regel nachvollziehbar und nicht durch einen Code, der im Backofen der Küche versteckt wurde oder für den du sonst eine unlogische Handlung vollbringen musst.

Der Hinweis bietet dir Hilfe in den Suchszenen, er zeigt dir ausserhalb an, wo es etwas zu tun gibt; zeigt bei Bedarf welches Inventarobjekt wo genutzt werden kann und wenn es nichts zu tun oder finden gibt, wird er die Richtung anzeigen, die du als nächstes einschlagen muss. Gleichzeitig gibt es noch das Buch. Sobald du die Karte gefunden hast, wirst du dort sehen können, wo genau du bist und wo eine Aktion möglich ist. Laufen musst du selber, die Karte ist nicht anklickbar, aber die Wege sind nicht so endlos lang und obwohl du einiges an Laufleistung zu vollbringen hast: Man bekommt nicht das Gefühl, dass dies nur geschieht, um Zeit zu schinden.

Mountain Crime Requital bietet dir einen tollen Krimi mit einem überraschenden Ende.

In Mountain Crime: Requital you play as Dr. White, who just received a phone call of a patient from the White Wolf Hotel. Upon reaching the hotel, your patient, Mr. Grey has been bitten by a poisonous snake, and the evidence points towards murder. Every single resident of this hotel is suspicious, and it's up to you to find out what really happen, as the number of corpses starts to piling up!

Another adventure and this time, heavenly inspired by Agatha Christie's works, although not even close of reaching its cult status. Alawar Stargaze sure did tried, and the result is amazing, but it's just not easy to create and portrait a plot with major impact. This title brings a fantastic plot where the player must pursue tips and evidences towers the real murderer, before more lives are taken. Throughout the game Dr. White keeps finding pieces of information to construct a case and solve the ultimate puzzle of why the murder is taking the lives of the residents of the White Wolf Hotel. This is a well implanted feature, as the player doesn't really need to find such notes, but once you're deep into the story, all the information counts towards the player enthusiastic search for the truth. Not every game regards this option as a guarantee feature, and not every title really offers a satisfying game where the player feels like an authentic detective.
All the characters hide something, and although you learn that fast enough, it's still no reason to stop them from being interesting and mysterious.
White Wolf Hotel hides many secrets and finding them all will be a treat for any adventure fan out there!

The chosen designs for Mountain Crime: Requital follows the category of horror mansions, minus all the ghosts, spirits or any monster, everything else is included, especially the isolated atmosphere that makes this thriller even more intense. The player can expect heavy rain effects, lonely and abandoned paths through the basement, interesting and very well decorated bedrooms, a beautiful backside with plenty of areas to explore, and much more!
Hidden Object scenes are interesting and offer a new and intuitive system by identifying the objects by image and not by their name. These scenes are very fast to complete and not boring at all.
Overall puzzles are easy to medium difficulty, and everyone should be able to complete them, as they are intuitive and fast paced!
There are no game modes to change such as difficulty or extras to pick, but it's well represented in terms of difficulty, and in terms of resolution, displaying perfectly well for HD monitors, which was very rare in 2011.

Mountain Crime: Requital is a must for any adventure fan, with beautiful visuals and a great plot to follow, and although midway through the game everything becomes predictable, it's still pretty fun to sit back and watch everything comes together.
