Might just want to get a new cable either way, though...
I feel your pain in a similar boat because after a few years, a good micro B to usb A cable starts wobbling in the port on the controller. I wish they made official controllers with the usb connection fused in (or at least not flimsy and poorly physically supported around where it joins).
Personally, I just use a cable as it's always been 'plug in and go' and there's a very slight latency penalty (usually) over bluetooth/wireless vs wired (on the order of milliseconds but that may add up, depending on what fps you play at). I agree it's not ideal and it's much nicer to not feel tied down with a cable though.
As long as steam is recognising input from the device, I think the input can be force recognised/mapped via steam's per game settings.
Helldivers just has an issue detecting controllers all together. And you can only plug in a new controller on the main menu. If you plug it in game it just won't detect it. I think you also have to plug it before starting the game all together. It's a super wonky controller implementation.
i just paired the controller with my laptop then started helldivers but it didnt work this way
no you don't need big picture just enable playstation configuration in the settings of steam
