Looking foward all news to PC, really hope Helldivers to be a sucess over here.
December is right on corner, can't wait to put some democracy work.
One of my few qualms with Helldivers (I only played the PS Vita version) was - if I'm remembering correctly - we could set up a closed solo game, or an open game anyone on PSN could join. But it really gave no easy option to just set up a game with friends list folks.
I'm not one of those "I only play with folks I know." I played tons of Helldivers with complete strangers, many were great people -- but towards the time I stopped playing, more and more "team killer trolls" would join games, waste everybody, rez nobody. I felt like I had no avenue to avoid that without some ability to invite/join PSN friends' games. So I hope we have a feature like that on the Steam PC version. Maybe, it's too much to hope for. :)

It's a good question though -- I've played on occasion PC games that only offered voice chat. And even one multi-platform title where the PC version's co-op offered nothing (no voice chat, no text chat), which was pretty ridiculous. :)
While it'll be tough to type much during heated sections of the maps in Helldivers, there are occasional breaks in the action where I think people can simply type a few words to talk about what they want to do next.
I'm sure many folks will want to use stuff like Teamspeak or Ventrilo, or Steam's own voice chat. I think text chat could be useful like when you're about to activate a Hell Bomb (huge blast radius). You can just type in "Hell Bomb! Run!" :)
I recall the game having (at least on PS3/4/Vita) "quick voice line" commands that let you say a pre-recorded phrase -- the D-pad would give 4 options. Some info here:

I enjoyed that though i wished it had a few more voice line choices, as that Reddit item suggests.
Guess as the first expansion, they played it up a bit. :-)
@BlackJackGT Sorry, didn't mean to overshadow you! Thanks for these links, as you said they may be useful for players to read up on. I'll actually add a few trailers to the list, thanks! :)
release in December means anytime in the month(so it can be the 31st) or you mean the 1st
Uncomfirmed yet :)
