Loving it, other similar games?

Are there more games like these that are the same style? Like this or Alien Swarm, where you can play Online Co-Op with other friends (preferable possible to play with 3 instead of 4 without having disadvantage)

I try almost all twin-sticks, and to me, most are Yugos compared to the Ferrari that is Helldivers. Here's a few I've put some time in, fwiw:

• Assault Android Cactus (local co-op only)
  
• Carnivore Land (early access; basic shooting fine but no depth imho)
  
• Circuit Breakers (online co-op planned; I find keyboard-ish menu interaction exasperating imho, game makes inexplicably no use of mouse)
  
• Guardians of Orion (early access; online co-op but bit crude at moment imho)
  
• Gunheim (i'm terrible at this)
  
• Relic Hunters Zero (free and fun, no online co-op)
  
• Rogue Continuum (online co-op planned; very fun, but deserted forum)

P.S. don't expect a walk in the park like in Casualdivers.


Also while not a top-down but a side scrolling shooter, a very fun co-op online game with up to 4 friends and establishing freedom way earlier than Casualdivers:

The Red Solstice is the one game that is actually quite similar to this. I highly suggest you check it out.

He said he wants a game where you shoot aliens, a top-down shooter, and he certainly likes to play with his friends online and to have fun so they are perfectly relevant. But if he wants to fall asleep while playing then for surely Red Solstice can be added to the list.

Red Solstice is the game you want. Population is a bit low, but otherwise it's golden. Same idea behind the whole alien swarm survival thing.

if you think helldivers is too easy you want red solstice. I adore the game. but the low population means you'll need friends to play with you . it's 8 player. and difficulty doesn't scale. so you'll need a team of 6-8 to do any missions above 'easy'.

As others have suggested, I'd say Red Solstice comes pretty close - it is also very loadout-focused, has somewhat procedural missions and similar controls. It does however play a bit more methodically and tactically than Helldivers and the missions are longer, but the learning curve is a bit harsher as well (albeit very rewarding).

Red Solstice seems awesome indeed, I owned it! But sadly I refunded it, it only runs 20-30 fps on my system, where Helldivers runs a solid 60 all the time. Maybe with a new computer I will try it again!

Unfortunately not, however if you looking to just satisfy that itching twinstick shooting urge than this is pretty much the games for you. It's even more loads of mindless fun if you can grab a partner to play, since it's very much just picking a weapon and shoot all enemies in sight.
