- On your ship, click on the MULTIPLAYER console at bottom of your screen, aka southern end of the ship.
- Browse MP games listed under MATCHMAKING tab left side.
- Click the appropriate keyboard key/controller button to choose how to filter the game browser results. For example, if you're new, maybe filter out "medium" and "hard" difficulty games.
- Join a game.
NOTE: The game does NOT offer an automated matchmaking function such as in the new Star Wars Battlefront. In Helldivers, you join games manually via an MP game browser. Or you host a game and decide if you want to open it to everybody, or just to folks on your Steam friends list.
I do think in retrospect the tutorial is incomplete, imho. They should've walked the new player through finding the multiplayer console on their ship, changing between the multiplayer game browser (to my mind mistakenly labeled "Matchmaking") and the Friends' Games tab.
Hope this is helpful and I've revised it after realizing I didn't explain some things. :) We were all new to this game once, and I think it's good gaming community to help new players with stuff we veterans take for granted. :)
From my experience with various games that had that feature, it's also frustrating when there simply aren't enough players, and then a randomized matchmaker simply won't find anything it deems you as a suitable match for. That's been my experience with Battlefront on certain modes.
Explained more in my Unofficial Helldivers (PC) FAQ (under PC Helldivers Multiplayer Q&A):

Wait what? first time ever I heard someone say that.
And what's there not to like? It gives you additional options. There is no difference with auto-matchmaking besides that it is better.
I'm confused....really confused by that statement
Not even AAA companies can get auto-matchmaking right so I don't see any problem
click game on top of the list, problem sovled. I can't believe i'm hearing this from somone on a PC.
I don"t see any problem, you just set up the filter one time for the games/difficulty/race you want and join the first game that pops up. It's the same as auto-matchmaking. Just that you get to chose if you want. Like I said, if you don't want to chose, just join the first one that pops up (that's what auto matchmaking would do)
I realy don't understand how you would dislike a game that has this, but it's your right so.
Well there isn't really a campaign. We are just spreading democracy one planet at a time!
