Yesterday I was like "Babe-I have to deploy alright, I have to protect Super Earth. YOU DON'T KNOW...you just don't know..."
Halo Spartan Wars:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/277430/
Which I had some fun with but dealt with the usual "Why can't we have the console Halo FPSs on Steam instead of this isometric crap?' whining. I think HSW could've been better (I gave it a positive review in the day) if the devs hadn't given it no post-release support whatsoever, or if it had had procedurally generated levels etc.
I felt like it had potential but it wasn't "carried through" as Arrowhead did with Helldivers. Also, Helldivers didn't have the albatross around its neck of being a spinoff to an FPS mega seller.
Also everyone insulting the OP for likening the top-down HellDiver to First-person-shooter Halo, nobody seems to realise that the Halo series is far more than just shooters. There's tens of books, one released RTS (and a second in the pipeline), several movies and a full season of a Halo T.V. series also in the making. And then of course the shooters. It's one of the most fully-fleshed out universes, comparable only to Star Wars and Star Trek. The OP was saying that the games have a similar aesthetic (another similarity between the Helldiver's), not that they play similar.
I highly doubt that Halo invented the concept of drop pods. In fact, a quick google search showed me that on the Halo wikia itself on ODSTs, there is a trivia entry that the ODSTs were heavily inspired by Starship Troopers. Another quick google search showed me that both Starship Troopers and WH40k do in fact have drop pods, and both of those franchises predate Halo by decades. A few other examples off the top of my head are: the Star Wars Old Republic MMO has drop pods, and Battlefield 2142 has drop pods as well (has anyone from this generation even heard of that game?). Though the pods from 2142 of course don't come from space, they're similar in that they're launched from high above, slam into the ground and out pops a trooper.
Linking Helldivers to Halo before anything else is really what's ignorant, considering the Helldivers intro sequence just SCREAMS Starship Troopers, the capes and armor are much more reminiscent of space marines/imperial guard rather than ODSTs or spartans, and... well 90% of the rest of the game continues to scream Starship Troopers.
none of the characters are named besides your default username
also drop pods and body armour are hardly new ideas, this game is more starship troopers than anything else
It's an isometric tactical shooter.
