I don't know if 21:9 (ultra widescreen) is supported though (e.g: 2550x1080 or 3440x1440 etc)
There is also a windowed borderless mode, which will run your desktop resolution however there are black bars on the left and right and it seems to be rendering in 16:9 (1920x1080).

Just my speculation -- I think this may mean they don't want the viewable area to become so huge that you start seeing stuff beyond the edges of the map that weren't meant for human eyeball consumption.
Or it may mean they want all players to have approximately the same screen view in front of them since screen-lock is a key part of the co-op game.
Or I could be wrong about everything here, which sometimes happens.
