Worth buying in 2024?
I never even heard of HELLDIVERS up until a recent trailer for the second one and wanted to swing around and play the original, do plenty of people still play this game? It looks fun.

Only if you have a group of friends to play with or are willing to play solo. The game has and always has had an issue with the MP where you join a random match and are either kicked or just shot and killed the second you spawn in and if you stay and get revived they shoot you again.

At this point wait and check out the sequel that comes out next month and hope it isn't as bad. The game has a great premise and can be fun if you are lucky to get a game where the people actually try and don't kill you on purpose, but that's pretty far and between.

Dunno what region that might be, but I had absolutely no issue with joining a multiplayer game with other new players, and a few games to choose from. The player-base will probably quite a bit smaller given the game's age, but for like $5 USD for the game & expansions it is a bucket of fun.

Unfortunate that it may be happening now, but when I played back when, it never had this issue at all. I joined random games all the time and everyone was always pushing for mission success.

I'm a new player and out of 6hrs so far, I had 2x host migrations that resulted in a dropped session - that's it. No other issues besides my own skill level :-)

I got it last week, it's tons of fun and there are still many people playing. Also as long as you stay out of level 12 and higher difficulties as a noobie, you really don't have to worry about getting kicked.

as a newbie just stick to difficulty 1 to 4, and then once you think you got the hang of it and some upgrades move to 5 or 6.

Plus some mission objectives are *not* solo friendly at all (like defend objectives and ordinance clearance) so expect a few skill barriers to overcome as you learn the game. It's a lot of fun with random teams but friendly fire is very unforgiving so you need to constantly watch your firing angles. It is rewarding when 3-4 randos manage to coordinate into a somewhat effective fighting force. Other times the use of stratigems does more damage than the enemy. :D

The game is decent, I was expecting more with it being backed by SONY though.

Still very active considering, so you definitely don't need prearranged games.

It's not overly sensitive to ping, so I highly recommend disabling the "my region only" filter, so you can see the worldwide games. Almost always games to join.

Helldivers 2 will be a completely new experience being over-the-shoulder 3rd person. Top-down has a special place in that the action can completely encircle you while you manoeuvre & aim where 3rd person you will have more of a tunnel-vision challenge and even with your head on a swivel, manoeuvring through the terrain won't have the same run&gun vibe. You also lose the challenge/stress of a shared screen, unless they somehow artificially impose that on people. The other Sword of Damacles hanging over HD2 will be twin stick vs mouse & KB. They definitely tried handicapping mouse users in HD, but in a 3rd person shooter there is absolutely no contest between mouse and thumbstick for aiming. When you start looking at hitboxes in 3 dimensions, there aren't many options to avoid "easy mode” for mouse users.
