Ah yes, a game that came out like 2 months ago in a very early alpha stage should already have all those things, true. It still amazes me how people misunderstand what EARLY ACCESS means and proclaim things dead when all they've seen so far is a rough shape of what the final product will be. And unlike most other games, this one filles a good niche nothing else does and is fairly well made for being in early Alpha stages.
I'm 100% certain modding support and private servers are on the roadmap, just not before other more ground features are made. The devs still need feedback and public lobby data. If people just mod the hell out of the game and make private servers and never submit feedback because modders are fixing everything themselves then the game will be in an even rougher state.
As for it going dead... unlikely if they simply improve upon what they have currently made. The game's ideas are top tier. It just needs more work. And I'm saying this as a dude who's been rummaging throuhh all kinds of Early Access titles for years. This is one of the better ones, I've said that in other posts and I'll say it again.
As for it being a competitor to Helldivers... Helldivers 2 is a more traditional horde survival game. ST has a focus on base building and large group coordination and large scale battles with tactics, as opposed to a 4 man squad fun shooter
