Well, it's true many mmorpgs let you equip something but disable its "visual" look. I don't see any options for that in Helldivers' options menu.

If you check your capes options at the Armory console in the ship, I think the one labeled "Combat" is probably the simplest design and shortest cape fwiw. It still flops around like a butterfly wing. :)

The capes help spread managed democracy more efficiencity so no you can't remove them.

If you don't like capes then just run training over and over again since you don't have one there. Problem solved!

Well as I and others have already said you can't so I guess you will just have to suck it up.

After you dive hundreds of times into hostile territory, and find yourself with nothing left but a few bullets and a torn cape you will learn to appreciate its value. It only comes with experience. It feels good to spread Democracy!

Because you cannot spread Democracy without it. This is the true reason behind it.

There is even a "cape spin" achievement. Capes are part of the game design.
