Still no cross-platform? (
I know it's an old question but I don't really understand why not.

It's not an FPS where a mouse has significantly better aiming than a gamepad. And even if it did, it's not a competitive game.

I just played it with a friend on his PS4 and we had an absolute blast. 2 of my friends have PS4s and I'd love to play this with them.

I have a PS3 so I can get it there if nothing else works but still, why no PC-PS crossplay?

The problem is that PC uses Steam for connecting players and PS3 uses Sony software. So far it was impossible for Sony and Steam to cooperate and allow cross-system connectivity.

The problem is impossible to solve by small game developers - only possibility is that those two companies create interconnector between their systems. Since it doesn't give them much money but will create a lot of technical issues the solution will probably never be introduced.

Arrowhead's FAQ thread here links to a Rocket League dev's reddit post attempting to explain the problems involved in console-PC cross play:

https://m.reddit.com/r/RocketLeague/comments/3b20r8/question_about_cross-platform_play/csipzgm
Parties are entirely implemented via platform-specific services. So when you party up with your friend on PS4, all the data that goes back and forth to make parties work - "This guy joined our party. We're joining this server." etc. goes through Sony's system.

There's no way to send that data to a Steam user because Sony's system does not know Steam exists, much less who your friends are on it.

The only way to do cross-platform parties is to have your own independent friends list and party system backend that handles it all separately from Sony/Steam/etc.

Unfortunately this is a big system and as an indie developer we have to pick our battles on what we spend our time and resources on. We weren't even sure cross-play would be approved until very recently, so it would have been a bad decision to invest heavily in a multiplatform party system only to be told it wasn't approved.

It would also be an additional risk at launch for us because if our party servers couldn't handle the load, it could break everyone's ability to party up and play together, not just cross-platform, whereas relying on Sony and Steam services is a much safer and more reliable choice.

We realize that it's still disappointing and are looking into workarounds as well as considering whether we can take on a full party/friends system overhaul to allow cross-plat partying.
Now if Sony acquired Steam and integrated it fully into the PlayStation Network, then maybe PC-console Helldivers play -- at least on PS4 (dunno about the PS3 and Vita versions) could be conceivable. But probably that won't occur because pigs aren't flying and Hell hasn't frozen over yet. :steamhappy:

I played the Vita version for a few months in spring-summer 2015. I don't have a PS3 or PS4, and Helldivers was a system seller on Vita for me. Fun enough but the tiny screen, sometimes fidgety "Vita back finger swipe controls" and unreliable connections with PS4/PS3 players were a struggle. Even if it was technically feasable/cost effective to have had compatibility with PC players, I think Vita would've likely had to have been left out for connection reasons.

Fair enough, but still shame.

I'm not planning to get a PS4 yet so I guess I'll have to buy the game for both PS3 and PC.

But if I were Sony, I'd go out of my way to have crossplay with Steam. MS doing crossplay and cross-compatibility for Xbox and UWP is a big deal

honestly i never see any game that told us that it can play cross platform really success as it should be. most are heavy lag, connection problem to the point that the developer remove that feature from their game or it just never exist from the beginning.

Portal 2 worked fine between PC and PS3 from what I know, and I played a fair share of Rocket League - a game where latency is of utmost importance - with my friend on PS4.
