Check out this possible workaround from the Helldivers support site. It includes instructions on how to "reset" controller mapping to default -- may be what one needs to do if the settings got out of whack.

First method seems simpler. Second seems more complicated, and you're advised to backup some stuff as a safety measure, so that one's a long list of steps. Probably best to try the first, simpler controller remapping reset method and see if that works.

I kinda wish they had kept the "Helldivers Bugs and Fixes" stickied thread here at Steam forum.

Gamepad Remapping

Steam

General Remapping
The bindings are stored in %APPDATA%\Arrowhead\Helldivers\user_settings.config which is a plain-text file.

You can open it in notepad and remove the mapping for the controller you want to reset.

The default mapping will then be applied the next time you start the game.

If the above did not work you can take these steps to reset controller inputs while retaining progress:

1. Find the Helldivers save folders:

- One is located in AppData, typically:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Arrowhead\Helldivers\saves

- One is located in Steam, typically:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[userid]\394510\remote

2. Backup these folders

3. In the AppData save folder, delete the files named:
- helldivers_steam_[id].old
- helldivers_steam_[id].sav
- CAUTION!!! Do not delete the files ending in "_user"

4. In the Steam save folder:
- Open the file named helldivers_save using for example Notepad
- Select everything in the file (ctrl+a)
- Hit delete to empty the file completely
- Save the file (ctrl+s)
- The file should now be 0 bytes large, if not redo these steps

5. Start the game:
- You might get prompted regarding Cloud Sync Conflict, if so select "UPLOAD TO STEAM CLOUD".
- You will need to watch through the intro.
- Press play and you will enter the tutorial. Press start and select "Skip Tutorial".
- Once in the main menu, exit the game.

6. Play the game:
- Controller inputs are now reset and all your progression will still be kept.

7. If this did not work:
- Copy your backed up versions of the saves back to the save folders.
- Start the game and make sure that everything is back to the way it was.
- Restart at step 3.

On my 2nd read of this, I'm unclear on if the first, simpler controller remapping reset method KEEPS campaign progress too, as it's not mentioned. That's only mentioned for the 2nd, much more complicated reset method.

Maybe Arrowhead's Foreverapeon could ask about that for us?

I never got any popup for the cloud sync conflict, the error still occurs.

OK did you try the simpler 1st reset method? Otherwise, that's all I got. :)

You can always submit a "support request" via Arrowhead's support center to see if they have any other suggestions:

I did both but I will file a support request.

I think I have a similar problem. Startet the game today, haven't changed anything and now Left-Stick are chat commands. But D-Pad isn't moving. So I can't move with XBox One Controller =(

I stopped playing this actively a while back because of this issue. Fixed it recently.

Go into Big Picture
Navigate to Library and find Helldivers
Manage Game
Controller Options > Use Steam options for Non Steam Controllers change to Forced Off

This works with any game that has its native controls ruined by the horrible Big Picture controller options.

I have actually figured that out, forgot to update this thread.

In my case the Logitech F310 gamepad had a built-in mode switch that I pressed accidentally. It even had an LED to indicate the swapped mode, but it's rarely used and easy to forget. That is NOT the XInput/DirectInput switch on the bottom of the gamepad. In other gamepad I saw you had to hold Mode and press Left Stick to switch the mode, but in F310 just hit the Mode button.
