About the progress, if you're refering to the second player on local co-op being a clone of the first, that's because of how steam handles accounts (There's no guest account system); because of this every time you play on local co-op the other players will essentially be clones of yourself.
If by any chance, what you want is to transfer your progress from PSN to Steam, I'm affraid that's not possible.
I realize it has never been splitscreen, I just use that term to clarify that I mean local co-op as in from the same computer since some people think local co-op refers to LAN.
Okay. As it has been in the past that any progress my friend(s) make, they lose as soon as we quit the game session, which is no fun.
All I want is their progress to be locally saved (as in, account copy #X has persistent progress seperate from main account but only can play locally in addition to my own account), which shouldn't be any difficulty to do as pretty much all other local co-op (same screen/splitscreen whatever) do this. What's the point of playing locally when you can't save progress, especially with how much content and leveling up there is?
The reason why clones can't keep their own progression is because guest accounts were made dispossable (there's even a sort of "bug" where a guest playing on keyboard will have a two or three digit number), and their progression is linked to yours for the sake of convenience.
In other games, (e.g. Magicka and Duck Game) your client can make separate accounts for each of your guests locally, but soon as you jump into online (This happens in duck game), the guest account is ditched and made a copy of the main. As I said before, this has to do with steam not handling guest accounts as the PS4 and XBone does; this has been suggested many times before but so far, Valve has not done anything.
Ah okay.
Well I don't care about playing online, I just want to play locally with friends, and it doesn't make sense that they have local co-op when progression isn't saved, yes it is 'convenient' but it mostly voids the purpose IMO. (Nonetheless I appreciate that they offer it at least)
That clarifies it, I just wish they did it differently, because although Valve doesn't do it, that doesn't mean they can't come up with their own solution and locally save things for offline play at least (surely there would be a workaround for online play too... if it uses the system you say it does, perhaps just have seperate save files locally then just set those as the 'main' account for valve to copy, then repeat the process for each additional player. It's dirty but could work). In theory it should be pretty easy but idk.
anyways... thanks for the reply. Guess I won't be playing this game with friends anytime soon unfortunately.
Playing the game with your friends in the same room without needing 2 consoles/PC's and 2 accounts that both own the game, what the ♥♥♥♥ do you think it is? If you want progression and co-op, tell your friend to quit being such a bum ass and buy their own machine. Then you can play MULTIPLAYER and have all the progression you want. Until then, you'll just have to DEAL with SHARING so your poor friend doesn't have to start out with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ unupgraded weapons and stratagems.
What a kind response, thank you! I really appreciate such thoughtful and good meaning replies to month old threads. It really brightens up my day.
Shared splitscreen (local co-op, whatever) is still a very common practice, and there is an audience for it. Just because you think no one could or should possibly do it, because obviously multiple pcs is better than one. Silly us! Thinking that spending time in person could possibly be more fun than doing it over the internet.
All local multiplayer games that I own store progression for multiple additional users, I thought it would be the same with Helldivers. Looks like there isn't any plans to change that. That's fine. My question was answered, I don't intend to play this with friends locally now, or ever really. This is a closed topic and there's no need to insult others over their opinions. Let's be civil now, this is the internet after all.
