I usually go 5, I can solo quickly and enemies are easy. Not a lot per map but speed is the determining factor for me personally.

Some people prefer more per map and take longer (more objs = more time).

When I needed samples I would just solo lvl 6 cyborg planets. That level gives a good amount and the tanks don't show up on that difficulty. Plus after enough runs I would have rep to do the cyborg boss and he is super easy to solo and gives good xp.

I prefer the highest difficulty(Helldive) illuminate planet. Use the cardio accelerator and don't engage them it all. The scouts are easy to deal with ( use breaker ) and if you trigger an alarm, just run. Also dont focus on completeing objectives like escort or defend... Just activate and abandon ( or kill ) them. Bring a mech, jump pack, and obliterator. You'll get 2 research point worth of samples for each mission. Thats how I farmed my samples..

You can find 8(lv3),13(lv6),21(lv9),26(lv12l samples in a capital defending mission or attacking on enemies' home planet.

This right here. I'd use these events to sample farm. Bring Cardio and also UAV and/or Distractor Beacon (if you have either).

Something else I did on my new account was to keep dropping ranks over and over again (I kept my rank between 12 and 18 for around a week) to grind research points from leveling up.

Nice thing about this was that it allowed me to grind research points simply from getting XP (doing lots of RS, some boss fights and of course any other mission that I finished) without having to go out of my way to actually search for samples. Those samples then were a nice bonus whenever I'd join a mission where people wanted to hunt for them.

1 bee, 2 beacons and 1 AT14 (for cybor) or MG torrent (for bug) or resupply (come along with the Punisher for illuminater) is just fine for solo sample farming. I don't drop my levels because I plan to reset my account when I reach lv50.

BTW, since we have so many points that have no way to go when we're lv30 or higher, the developers should give us a way to use them. Maybe in exchange of some decoration for our mother ship. It's so boring to see all the same bridge when I enter a game.

Or let them be used for stuff like recoloring capes, something cosmetic

I do lvl 12 helldives on Bug and Illuminate planets. Bring something that can quickly kill the scouts, like a laser rifle/shotgun. Avoid combat as much as possible. Bring UAV and Distractor beacon. Only complete mandatory objectives like black boxes, start the other ones and let them fail. You get 2 research points each time you extract this way (assuming you find all the research)

Cyborg planets are not advised due to them having tank scouts that pretty much instantly pop the alarm. If you have to grind research on cyborg worlds, bring friends and make sure you have AP guns and rockets. Even then, avoid the enemy as much as possible.
