It's cartoonish like the free Relic Hunters Zero, and will have an ARPG bent in skills and storyline and quests/missions. Lead designer told me that while he loves Helldivers, RHL won't have friendly fire or 'screen lock,' and will instead try other gameplay mechanics to encourage online cooperative play. No local co-op will be offered; their goal is to build the game from the ground up for online co-op on Steam, other platforms maybe considered down the road.
It's going for a Free 2 Play bent (not for everyone, but the devs insist they won't want to "give F2P a good name" so to speak) It's still $4K or more from meeting its $50k goal with 3 days, and not sure it'll make its goal. :( I think a lot of Helldivers fans might enjoy it, in a bit of a different fashion. If it works out, I'll get to try the early closed alpha version in Q1 2018.
=========================
All three [bAlien Breed[/b] games (similar viewpoint as Helldivers or AS) offer 2-player online co-op; however, it's really difficult to find anyone to play those with. I believe the co-op was limited to playing a few chunks of the single player campaign missions.
===========================
I play lots of twin-stick shooters by various small developers, but almost all of them claim they can't support online co-op. That either it's too problematic from physics, or they can't afford the resources to do the networking stuff involved, etc.
If you just want some more twin-stick thrills but can live without online co-op, I'm a big fan of 10tons' roguelike NeonChrome and the more recent Solstice Chronicles: MIA, by the dev of squad level RTS The Red Solstice.
My main issue with Solstice Chronicles: MIA -- which I backed on crowdfunding site Fig -- is that ALL the aliens basically make a straight beeline to you, and to me it's not as interesting as the diverse AI reactions and tactics in Helldivers.
I do hope Arrowhead remains in the twin-stick arena. If they do transition into FPS for the Secret Project, probably I will not be enlisting with them any further.
There's quite a few more out there, search the above store pages for more suggestions.
I don't think it has a 'global campaign' per se and seems more story-based with bosses and stuff. I'm eager to see how it turns out, and Frozenbyte certainly earned its overhead twin-stick shooter stripes on Shadowgrounds and Shadowgrounds: Survivor, so they're not new to the genre.

This is all of course just biding time until we hopefully hear something about Arrowhead's Secret Project. Preferably before I qualify for Social Security. And I'm probably the oldest gamer here, and it's not that far away. So please hurry up Arrowhead before I'm old and fragile and can't enjoy your next game. :D
