How To Play HELLDIVERS With A Gamepad
There used to be detailed instructions here, but I decided to make this post into a guide, which you can see here:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=838777207

Any comments or suggestions belong in the guide comment section now. Main reason I did that is because the format of the post was more fitting as a guide than forum thread, and it is more easily searchable than a forum thread, while still retaining your freedom to voice your thoughts about the contents.

You can press "any button" on keyboard, you just then have to delete keyboard player, after appearing of controller player.

A workaround, but not sure if it would be preferable.

I always play Helldivers using a gamepad and I changed the "USE" key from E to my middle-mouse-button in the m/kb configuration.

Do you play on hight levels? Do you play solo, or with voice?

I don't see why should gamepads on twin-stick shooters have any disadvantage against KB/M, it is only a matter of habit.

When i started play in Helldivers, i found it is very similar for Magicka. I thought i can play on gamepad at first levels for fun, as i played in Magicka. Well, i was wrong. I think mainly it is because of limited amount of ammo.

Ammo can be gotten around easily with some resupply stratagems. Also, if you unlock a resupply pack, you can have portable ammo with very high capacity when upgraded. Or use laser weapons, Trident is highly praised.

Also try to aim a little more deliberately, don't be afraid to use the laser sight. With time, accuracy will come, no matter if on gamepad or mouse.

We took a quick look at the new PS4 DualShock 4 controller and it appears that there is a compatibility issue here, which explains the cloning.

This is something that we will look into, but in the meantime the easier solution is for people to user an earlier model until we've fixed it.

Generally DS4 shouldn't be needed for Helldivers ^^

Plug the controller in before starting the game. Otherwise, the game will not see your controller.

I can't speak for other controllers, but the game detects the Xbox 360/One Controller regardless of being plugged-in or not when starting the game.

You can use the controller's buttons to skip intros. Once you arrive to the "press any key" screen, it is imperative that you press a button on your controller to proceed.

It only matters what input method you use when continuing or starting a new game on the main menu, before it doesn't matter.

I change between KB/M and Controller just by going to the main menu.

I'll take your word for it! Though I consider the plug-in before launch a method that cannot fail for a likely reason which is why I recommend it; it's a general approach :)

Just tried it and it works out. Thanks for pointing that out.

I have had the cloning issue with a Saitek P990 Dual Analog gamepad as well, to be a little more specific.

This means I also am aware you do not need a DS4 to play Helldivers, but hey, if you have the console, why not just use your favourite controller on the PC as well, right? :)

Grrr, I used to play this on PS4... I'm a bit bummed my DS4 doesn't work, and the game starts to look ugly on 1440P. I don't want to play this with keyboard and mouse

Ok, so I finally found the solution to the DS4 issue in other threads. Turning off controller support in Steam fixed it. And the graphics are not that bad, it's just the shadows and items outside the field of focus.

Thank you so much for that! I just bought a new DS4 just for helldivers because my Xbox dpad was waaaay too useless for consistant strategem use and thought I was going to have to return the DS4 because of the dual player issue.
