Squad vs. ARMA 3?
For obvious reasons, I've recently been considering reinstalling Arma3 and actually playing it for the first time. For work reasons, it won't happen this soon, so I'm "gathering intel" first. :)

Arma3 seems an order of magnitude more complex than Squad and, if I recall correctly my first incursion, it felt a lot clunkier than Squad, which is to be expected - Arma3 seems more towards a sandbox, while Squad seems much more streamlined. But I'm now wondering if that assessment is right, or how the actual in-game experiences compare - incl. community-wise.

I'm in the middle of revisiting an old video of Karmakut's and it seems like comparing a CVT Honda Fit/Jazz to a carburated, manual, and modded Land Rover, each offering its own type and degree of fun.

Would anyone like to chime in?

Thanks in advance.
I'm also posting this on Arma3's own forums, for balance.

arma3 pvp pretty much consists of TKOTH. maps are bigger than squad so theres even more downtime.

This. Just running around killing random people in a zone. No teamwork, no communication, just call of duty with extra steps

I'm so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ butthurt that owi is doing this to the literally only worthwhile milsim game

yeah, and the trouble is with arma3 tkoth once you do get some transportation then dismount and get reasonably close to any of the objectives because there is basically zero cover you get owned by proners etc.

i do think the red orchestra series would be a closer comparison to squad than ArmA 3. i personally prefer the singleplayer and pve content in ArmA series. squad for me is a quick pickup game for pvp

Arma 3 koth was my favorite of all time. Unfortunately, I too tried to rewind time and reinstalled it.... The 30fps and ultra clunky everything... Just couldn't do it. Now if squad had the same game mode🤔🤔... Yes just wishful thinking and I know it won't happen.. let's just hope Arma 4 will release sometime this decade....

You would be correct in that ARMA is more of a sandbox than Squad. I can't say much about public pvp servers, but imo ARMA shines in online Co-Op where you play with other people against A.I.
If you're in to Karmakut, check out his Discord for info on his Liberation server and how to get started with that. It usually has a lot of helpful people online to show you the ropes.
If you're really looking for a sense of community in Arma, I would highly, HIGHLY consider joining a MILSIM group. You may need to bounce around a couple groups to find one that suits you, but its a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ blast.

Arma 3 shines when you play coop on missions build with care and love that not require a zeus. With the right modset Ace/Acre/Cup. It's a one of a kind experience and a great one at that aswell.

Shamelessplug: https://www.ark-group.org/ feel free to join.

For the vanilla pvp experience i would suggest squad. Vanilla arma 3 pvp is ehh.. well its arma.

To be quite honest i don't even think you can compare squad and Arma they might look the same but on the inside there far apart.

Hey, thanks for all the helpful replies, folks. Yeah, I'm not very into TKOTH, and at the time Arma was too much of a jump for me. After getting the ropes in Squad it will be less of a shock, I guess. Your replies also seem to get in line with some that I got in Arma's own forums, that's great.

I'll admit that PvE Coop is one of the big "pluses" for me, as I'll always struggle with lag - even though PvP is certainly more unpredictable, which adds to the challenge.

With that said, though... I'm wondering if there isn't an Arma mod to make it play a little like Squad (say, RAAS or whatever, plus the streamlined experience). Not sure anyone would have given themselves the hassle. :)

GEE-ZOOS! "Clunky" is a massive understatement, lol!

The thing with Arma 3 is you have to join closed scheduled weekly games to have the same experience you have in squad - milsim groups, just semi-public projects where you have to register, wait for the begining, try to join the server before it gets full, and try not to be kicked because some vip group need free slots for them. Nowadays public pvp in arma 3 is dead (and even pve), koth is ♥♥♥♥ and always has been. So it's more pain in the ass to play pvp in arma 3 than to just continue with squad.

Just leave negative review because of emotes and continue playing squad lol. Or switch to project reality

Try CTI, that's probably the closest you'l find to (R)AAS

If you have some friends to play with then arma 3 is most definitely more fun than squad overall. Been playing a lot of it ever since the prairie fire dlc came out. If nobody you know has it though there are still good servers to join that consistently have people. You can do a combat patrol on the official servers, there's a server called ahoy that usually has 30-60 people on it, lots of modded survival and rp servers. There's still a lot to do and it's good simple fun if you can get past the not so simple controls. My recommendation is just to focus on learning the basic controls first and every once in a while just go to your keybinds to learn a new control, use it for a while to commit it to memory, then move to the next one.

ARMA3 doesn't offer the same PvP experience that Squad has at all. There is no RAAS let alone AAS game modes. All I've ever seen is a few servers hosting TKOTH.
