I used to be able to run Squad on Epic settings at like 70-100 fps constantly but now it's literally like 40-50 fps on ALL settings, low or epic, it makes literally zero difference.. I have a 2080 and an i7 9700k.. More than enough to run this game well but now I can't enjoy it... What's worse is on Fallujah especially I get EXTREME microstutter every time I turn around.
Exactly the same with me. Does not matter what setting I am. from low to epi is always 40 FPS
And urban areas are unplayable
Same.
Anyone who keeps saying they have zero issues is lying or being paid by OWI.
Ryzen 5800X3D, RTX 3070, 16 GB 3200MHz, 1440p, 144Hz. I get 120-144 frames most of the time, on some maps constant 144 (= max). Tessellation is disabled (significant frame drops on certain maps).
Edit: I am not saying that the game is well optimised.
If the developers really want to fix these issues then it will likely have to come from them going back on a good chunk of the shadow and lighting overhaul. I don't know what they were thinking when they decided that they were just going to force all the super expensive settings on by default. Y'know the settings that most people had to turn off or down just to get playable framerates. . .
Maybe we will get some more information soon. There is a Q&A that ought to be finished anytime now (still don't see why it takes multiple days to answer a handful of questions) but maybe they will answer some of the questions about performance that have been asked. I especially want to know what their stance is on forcing existing customers out of playing the game but I know darn well that will be ignored, at least unless this new CM is willing to answer some tough questions.
There was a valid reason for the update. In the past, a lot of guys even with higher specs would put their settings to low. The reason for this was because on low, enemy players were super easy to see due to the lack of shadow, shadow effects and foliage. So if you played on Medium or above settings, you were at a huge disadvantage. If you search back a few years, a ton of players used to complain about this issue.
The major graphical fidelity update pretty much removed this advantage that some players exploited by just forcing everyone to use better shadows and foliage settings. The new low is like the old medium.
At the same time I imagine they wanted to remain competitive in terms of graphical fidelity in 2022 and beyond.
In saying all this, I’m not sure it was the right move since the game has become unplayable to many. I started playing this game in Dec of 2015, and back then I used to get over 60 frames with an AMD FX 8350 and GTX 1050 Ti
I think I lean much more towards the second reasoning. Seems like they used the "abuse" angle as an excuse to push for higher graphics. In no way was the old medium the new low, in that case I would still be able to play the game. No, they pushed those settings way higher than that. If I remember correctly, old shadows used to only render at maybe a couple hundred meters, now they render at over a thousand. It especially doesn't help that stuff like contact shadows are forced on as well.
It definitely wasn't the right move. Trying to remain graphically competitive at the expense of a not so insignificant chunk of your playerbase is a scummy move. Folks like me are stuck in a position where I am either out the cost of the game or out the cost of a new computer. Sure, I might have only bought the game for 20 bucks back in 2017 and have put over a thousand hours into the game in the years since but that doesn't change the fact that I didn't buy the game not to be able to play it years later. I could at least excuse this sort of thing if the game was still in early access, like happened when they upped the Steam page specs for the game once or twice during the EA period.
That's not a valid reason.
In PC gaming there exists 1 inescapable inequality among the playerbase- the rig they use. Lower FPS is a severe handicap.
The developers revamping their graphics to force players to use higher demanding settings takes this inequality and exacerbates. Allowing all players to choose their settings and therefore FPS equalizes the playing field.
I had a decent rig and played on lower settings for the reason you mentioned. It's not abuse of cheating as it was part of the game and available to all players.
The only reason I imagine the developers introduced a forced graphics setting is for better marketing. Now all youtube videos and streaming of the game show a consistent pretty appearance at the cost of performance and realism.

Sorry, let me rephrase. They may have thought it was a valid reason. I don’t believe it was.
I personally think it was a terrible idea. The game worked on my rig back in 2015 with that FX 8350 / GTX 1050 Ti, so it should work today with that same hardware. I feel bad for the people who can’t upgrade their hardware often but still love the game. If you paid any amount of cash for a game, it should work forever with that original hardware at the time of purchase.
Would love to see them spend about the next 3 patches really hammering out every ounce of performance they can do. Thats going to retain many users, boost morale for the game in general and even promote new sales from within.
I am sure the team looks into optimization often. It just seems like communication is low on this front.
