Squad has no thermals, Squad needs no thermals

If they add the Javelin like they've teased a bunch of time they've got to add thermals.
Thermals will not be added to the game. Maybe for the Commander UAV but that would be it. There will be no thermals on the can opener (javelin).

It is a huge balance issue, and hard to counter. Its also to replicate quite hard in games. You also have to consider Glass, Water, Clouds, different types of smoke and other heat sources and sources that block thermals. Yes they have the set up in the SDK for them and im pretty steel division uses it.

I wouldnt see them anytime soon, maybe MAYBE on attack helicopters. But it would be a very very limited range for them. (500m or less would be my guess)

as it stands right now, the game heavily favours infantry gameplay over vehicle's. i firmly believe vehicles were only added for flavour and are poorly thought out. competent AT will always outclass competent armour. thermals, RMB coax and the likes are necessary for good balance

It works in PR, I don't see what the big deal is. It would require some rebalancing to vehicles' health and AT weapons, but that's about it, mostly just number tweaking. With how vulnerable vehicles already are to Anti tank infantry, I don't see what the problem is.
Similarly, I don't understand why don't the majority of kits in conventional factions don't have 4x scopes at this point. It would increase the range of engagements to a more realistic level. And if anyone says "to balance with Insurgents", doesn't that defeat the whole point of the asymmetry between conventional factions and insurgents?

The majority of the kits for conventional factions do have 4x scopes or better...

SL
Medic
Rifleman
LAT
LMG
HMG (depending on faction)
Grenadier
Marksmen
Sniper
Combat engi (depending on faction)

Mostly as variants that only one player can use per squad, so for most conventional factions, the majority of players are gonna either be running with red dots or iron sights. I am saying that the majority of roles should have a 4x's scope, most modern armed forces work like that nowadays. Even Russia is starting to turn sights into standard issue equipment for their military, and they used to be the exception. In the game, the only faction that has a ton of 4x's are the British (which is who you're refering to in regards to combat engie). No other faction the Engi gets a 4x's, same with the HAT, only for the Brits they get a scope

You are delusional...conventional can field a full squad of 4x scopes or better and still have at least one role filled out for each "important" role. Players choose to trade out their scopes to give the squad extra utility options beyond the "important" roles that are already filled up, such as a hat kit, a second medic, or a second lat.

I don't think they are going to add thermal but we never know. I do agree that infantry AT have a huge advantage over armor.

Has anyone here actually used or even seen thermals in real life? What the picture looks like? What time of day it's most effective?

Well it is thermal...which means IR spectrum, but still an optic (usually)...so lots of reflections can throw the imaging off.

I think Killer was not asking to learn about it, but whether you even know what you're talking about.

All US vehicle mounted thermal weapon sights have a day-TV camera for use during the day and a thermographic camera for use during night.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Jca8PCSR6Y

Here's a good example. Easiest way to tell the difference between if it's the Day-TV or IR is it'll say "DTV" or "FLIR" in the top left of the TADS FOV brackets.

If you notice the zulu times in the top left and convert those to Afghanistan/Iraq time, you'll notice that the DTV footage occurs from 0630/0500 to 1930/1800 while the FLIR footage occurs from 1930/1800 to 0630/0500. I don't know what time of the year these were taken, but it's indicative that DTV is used during the day and FLIR at night.

Thermal weapon sights aren't more effective than a normal DTV during the day, which is the time setting currently in game.

As Aegmar and Onimaho alluded to, infrared characteristics aren't really advantageous during the day or in minimal temperature contrast environments.

Thermal sights will only make sense if they ever introduce night maps and NVGs.

is DTV just a b/w camera then, or does it have IR capability?

The DTV is a high zoom b/w visible light camera- it's from the 80s. Color DTVs (M-DSAs) with greater resolution are slowly being introduced into newer versions of the AH-64E (V6).

Jeez, so they're so old and bad that they look like IR footage? amazing.

It's not pretty, but it gets the job done. The shadows are the main challenge with DTV- especially after a big smokey explosion.

The need to improve IR sensor tech on the other hand has driven some pretty significant progress since the 80s.
