What a load of rubbish. I will just assume that you have barely played SL yourself, or you would know why many players are biased against the role. It is not even the role itself, it is the type of player that take them.
" Wandering around as they please, no comms, no relaying info unless they're dead. "
This type of players. They hurt your Squad, they also hurt the team (not in a big way, but it accumulates). There are some marksman players that will stick to the Squad and benefit it, hell even push FOBs and revive when they can. These players seem to be the rare exception though, hence the bias.
What? If you play on servers like this, you really need to swap. 60%?! Anybody that doesn't talk in my squad gets kicked, plain and simple. I frequent only one server, and no mic players aren't really a problem there. Idiots that take marksman role not playing right are, though.
What's the server? Am looking for servers with good squads and SLs ; as for me it is pretty difficult to find :)
No, it's most certainly not this bad on NA servers. It's clearly evident that they have their expectations set way too high. That 60% is completely arbitrary. It only takes a few minutes to know that a ton of communication happens on NA servers. A bunch of people are talking in my squad and so are blueberries in local right now and this will continue till I decide to hop off of Squad.
All infantry rifle drops to minimum of 35 damage at extreme ranges; all of them one shot headshot and can two-shot torso within max damage range(easier with 5.56 due to being able to hit more than just torso).
So ironically you're better off with more ammo of standard rifles in vast majority of cases.
Especially MEA where everyone's a svd-comparable marksman.
Not sure if US servers are worse than the European ones I play on but I noticed that on servers that are filled with players that share a native tongue (mostly US/Australian/Brit) people tend to goof around more, I guess because they're all comfortable in the same language. This CERTAINLY doesn't mean there's more tactical/strategic communication going on though, I've had as many bad rounds (with no sane leadership) on those as on mixed-language servers. It's just more obvious on those latter ones since people just keep silent instead of talking trash.
Slightly off-topic rant:
Actually; SLs who arrogantly act like being experienced but have <10 hours in are actually the worst. Hurt the team by intentionally ramming/TK-ing heli's ("lol it's just a joke bro!"), set an extremely bad example for the new players they 'lead' (more experienced players leave the squad ASAP) and just ignore every Squad etiquette ("quick, grab that tank!"). Most often just ignore your advice ("just do as I say dude") and cause your team to be short 9 people right from the start until the end of the round. I might be too harsh, but I don't believe those guys are going to contribute anything to the community in short or long term.
