Yes, Early Acces has become the norm. Used to be, you would never see a game before Beta, at most.
I remember years ago, most of you won't, a small company called NovaLogic created a game called Joint Operations. I do remember updates, and spin offs of the original, but don't remember any kinf od Early Acesss.
And I don't think they had more than 8 devs through the entire cycle of the game.
They got lucky. Low manpower. High return.
The Squad boys are trying, I'm sure. I talked to one about tank developement. They want ♥♥♥♥ done right.
You think this ♥♥♥♥ is easy ?
try it.
I guess since I never joined at a state where I was aware of these promises, I can say that I'd be happy where it is. Obviously they do need to keep up on the promises that they've laid out (and I know they will, in due time). I was just expressing that I find this game fun as is! :)
I also think that a key difference between an Early Access title and some AAA game is funding (obviously). A company like Activision can pump out a new title every two or three years and it will be released as a full experience. They have all the funding they need, and a large team. Most games going through Early Access do so for funding purposes. I don't know why people expect a full fledged game within a year with a smaller development team.
I really don't see how EA is milking it though. You bought the game.... they aren't taking any more money from you.
There ya go.... funding. Developers can make money upfront and aren't held to any real standards other than, will the title function and does it (very) loosely fit what's advertised. Developers can then collect money literally for years without producing a final optimized product, if they don't walk away all together.
Imo, if anything is a scam to consumers (to go along with the thread topic) it's Steam's Early Access program. I think if developers want to do it honestly, release their titles as pre-order alphas or betas. Then they can still collect their funding, and consumers retain the option to refund if a title doesn't end up being what the developer advertised, or releasing when the developer advertised it would. You don't see that often though. Many developers would rather have their money first, and then milk development out for years.
Also, regarding v12
"A few other things have also taken place that if we had done without would probably have caused us to be released on time, we decided to trade a longer release window this time with a reduction in the amount of large systems making its way into A13. We have been implementing origin rebasing to completely remove jitter from weapons when you get far away from map root (this is a requirement to move past 4k maps, and to utilize all of the terrain on the 4k maps effectively), and we have been implementing a system that we hope reduces our networking costs when fully enabled paving the way for 100 player server."
I was speaking of the gaming industry in general.
However, if you want to get Squad specific... It's not entirely correct to state OWI hasn't misled players about anything. They've blown past 3 advertised release periods, on their way to failing to produce a finalized product by the 4th.
They accepted crowdfunding money through their Kickstarter advertising sniper roles, jets, attack helicopters, rounds of AAS never playing the same, "SUPPORT FOR TEAM TOURNAMENTS AND LADDERS. Both large scale 50v50 matches for public and clan ladders, and 5v5 and 8v8 on specifically designed smaller maps". That's just a few to substantiate my perspective.
I'm not saying I think Squad is a garbage game (it's certainly not imo) but the way some folks (not you specifically) act like OWI is God's gift to gaming development and has been perfect in their development of Squad is (imo) laughable.
We don't even know the specifics of what Squad is actually supposed to be in its final release state. One would think after 4.5 years of development and 3 years of playtesting, OWI could definitively convey the scope of the final release product. All we have is a list of things on a Kickstarter campaign and monthly updates (where things hyped 2 years ago or more still haven't made it into the game). We're 2 months away from the latest advertised release period, and OWI is still throwing things against the wall to see what sticks.
