Squad
Noobs will be Noobs
I enjoy squad and I enjoyed PR before. I like everything that sets it appart from other games and I think the game is going in the right direction. The recent changes of V10 are great, but there is a problem that needs to be adressed: Noobs

Don`t get me wrong: Nothing against new players. We all started at some point.
But squad is not an easy game to pick up. There are many things that are totally different or new compared to major FPS-Games. Many people come into the game and haven`t bothered to check out the rifle-range or watch some tutorials. That makes for frustrating experiences. For the new players, but also for experienced players.

Right now one noob-SL can easily ruin a game that has been going for an hour. Wasting resssources, using Logistics-Trucks as Taxis or Suicide-Vehicles or simply just not communicating with other players/squads and not doing his job. But it is not only inexperienced SL that can cause anger and frustration.

I feel the game needs to adjust to that. A rank- or pointsystem or simply playtime could determine if somebody is qualified to be SL. Also the player should have a microphone and be able to communicate. New players in general should understand the spawning- and point-system and maybe have done some mandatory range-time or in game tutorial before they are allowed to join servers. Maybe a simple test ("Mark the rally-point and fob on the map" or "which location is the next you can cap in this situation") will do. Right now, the game itself could do a lot more to help new players find their way into the game.

They comunity is great so far and 90% of they time new players will be given so friendly guidance. But the game needs to focus on that aspect asap. All the vaulting mechanics and bipods in the world can`t even out a bunch of rogue people playing COD or CS:GO in Squad.

What do you guys think could help improve the situation?

I see at least one problem with this approach. If/when a team doesn't have any players that meet the rank requirement (or the ones that do, don't want to be SL) then what?

Then the SL roles is unlocked to everyone available. As simple as that. All made possible by programming.

Mind you, I'm not arguing against the idea, but there's more than just a simple ranking or role locking mechanic to consider. ** There's also the developers having stated numerous times in the past, that they will not implement ranks or "lock" things behind requirements in the game...so we'd need to have a group of players get together and program a community mod for this to even be possible. **

Is it on a timer at the beginning of a match, and/or does it happen within the existing planning stage, or in addition to it? Does the requirement get implemented only at the beginning of a match, or is the mechanic implemented for the whole match?

Is there a minimum number of squads that must be formed for the match to be able to begin?

What happens when players get kicked from squads to make room for friends, or whatever reason...can they create their own squad if they don't meet the requirement, or do they need to wait until someone else does?

**side note: if waiting is necessary, you're likely to end up with even more players lonewolfing...or just leaving the server, causing unbalanced teams.**

A lot of variables need to be considered.
A public match full of random noobs and all their hijinks is far more enjoyable than playing with a bunch of jaded clan members that all prostack and Discord Ghost with their little flunky sycophant snitches on the other team.

At least with a full server of random noobs I feel like I'm getting somewhat of a fair game...
Tough call, I wonder if some kind of mutiny vote system could be implemented for each squad. Maybe something on a timer so that we don't get spammed with them. Have a high requirement like 6 of 9 or something. If the vote passes SL gets passed onto the most experienced member of the squad.
The best way to SQL= Someone who could SQL learning you one full round what to do how to do it. A good squadlead in a game has allot of factors you need to make your teammates feel comfortable with gaming with eachother. Because allot of guys who join the squad don't know eachother are maybe a little bit in a fear they don't do a good job etc.

A squad leader is there to say when you taken over a base : Hey guys great job good teamwork keep em coming. Stuff like that wil make the player feel comfortable with eachother so they communicate better and build team status allot faster in one round.

I learned a bit from a SQUAD player what the basics was of building stuff and how to arrange ammo points and building points he would follow me the whole round through and say place a sandbag here.... Set up a machine gun post there and some mortars here. In the end ofcourse although we lost the round he still said. Good job SQL good leading. He ignored the fact we lost and he did not blame me that we lost he even said good round allot of fun good leading. And in the end it's allot about fun.

But i think that was one of the best ways to learn. Even when you lead a squad the perfect situation is that you know what your doing. But even as a squad leader if you don't know what the chat button was for talking with other teams don't be afraid to ask. Or even if you doubt your own plan ask your team : Any suggestions guys any ideas you want a hab there? Or maybe somewhat closer there?.. The team your leading always give their opinion. And @ that point no plan is a bad plan. And even your team wil like it that you bring them in on your situation that your trying to solve.

I think no system should be there to give somebody a SQL status. Someone who likes squadleading will eventually lead a squad and wil learn in time what to do how to do it.
Squad is very simple when it comes to squadleading.

I noticed i was a noob and mistery myagi just did one round with me and explained everything and that's all it took to be a good enough squadleader. In the end you can mix it up with your own style give your team more orders. Like guys if you see an enemy. Let your buddy know which direction which bearing the enemy is. Communicate with eachother and be polite with eachother.

In the end i have more respect for a noob taking squadlead and trying to lead a squad than someone who is just complaining he's a bad/noob squadleader but they don't lead a squad themselves.

Who gives a ♥♥♥♥. I prefer to get a noob SL who just wants to have some fun rather than some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who thinks he's special forces behind a keyboard, yelling at people for dying in a computer game....

Persistent ranks are one of the worst things to appear in video games.
Trying not to be argumentative, but: Why actually?
People focus on individual ranks/stats instead of playing as a team.
ranking system is not going to happen .. has been discussed so many times ... the quality of the SL has nothing to do with experience.. you can still be awful with a couple of hundred hours.. I dont think there should be any qualification to be an SL, how do you learn if you never get to do it until you have x hours in game? What you end up with is many noob sls with many hours of ingame experience but none Sling... I agree that a ♥♥♥♥ SL can screw the game..had it the other night where two squads defended a fob on a flag that was uncapturable and didnt move up to defend the flag that was capturable!... we of course lost the flag and the next... very frustrating ..and no matter how many times they were told to move they sat there ... eventually everyone in their squads left and joined others... but its the sale and as always with any sale you get issues like this.. ranking only leads to BS Sls who will of course state that the have the requisite experience thus anyone not fit to be in their squad (for whatever BS reason they decide) will be kicked..

I saw last night an SL who has probably 100+ hours in game naming his squad 500+ hours only... I know for a fact that he is one of the worst SLs I have ever played with, it will fix nothing.

Not enough people take the squad lead role as is, many of the moaners are players with hours in game but dont step up and take the lead role themselves, then complain when others dont do it how they think it should be done. Adding restrictions to being an SL in an already limited pool of players doing it, you will end up with some servers where no one has the experience to take the SL role. so a bunch of blueberries running about ....

COD players who want to play it like cod will soon find a community that is un appreciative of their tactics and the spawn times (which Ithink are not long enough) will put them off.

The game still needs tweaks to stop wasting tickets, such as using vehicles recklessly or the magic rally warp ..

I sort of agree with OP and sort of don't. Squad was actually a super easy game for me to pick up and "get" (not that I'm the best player out there or anything) mainly because the game is not about epic 360 noscopes or being the leetest haxxor out there but is about communicating and contributing. Once you're "good" enough to make decent callouts ("enemy squad, 200 meters, at 165 moving east to west") you're officially helping the team. I think the game needs a short tutorial to demonstrate the right and wrong way to call things out, the right and wrong way to utilize vehicle assets and when and when not to commit to building FOBs or whatnot and we'll be golden.
there are loads of online videos and the start screen shows the buttons ... people that choose to follow them are more invested .. those that dont, either just want players to tell them how to do it or dont think its important... a tutorial offering could help but I dont think one that is compulsory to take a role is right.
I'd prefer a quick 15 minute instruction course when booting up the game for the first time, or something that can be replayed in the firing range.

    Simply
  • Welcome to Squad
  • What to expect
  • Run down of the various kits/roles
  • Explanation of the UI (compass, map, spawning, gamemodes, etc)
  • How to use a vehicle
  • Brief history and showcase of common tactics used in battle
  • Good luck > How to join a server
end

If I've noticed anything it's that very brief intro tutorials can really impact how new players play a game for the better, not many people go online looking for guides and expecting them to is hoping for too much

I come to realize that I have never had some alpha-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SL or Squadmember. Compared to that alternative I would gladly have some ambitioned Noob that wants to learn the game. And I can see why a ranking-system might not be a solution by some arguments made here. Noobs will be Noobs. Idiots will be idiots. Maybe we have to chalk up powertripping keyboard-commandos to realism. After all you have those in the military too.

This would be heavily needed for new players to get to basics and not just the button layouts and brief explainations. I would've not had much of an idea about how Squad functions unless I had played PR. Now I haven't played much Squad as time is an issue but everytime I come back I tend to go back to the Button Layout Image to get back to parts of the basics atleast.

America's Army has a requirement that you run through basic training for each role before you get to use them. Want to drive a vehicle? You have to get your (virtual) driver's license, want to be medic? You have to go through basic first aid training and etc.

I thought this was a pretty neat feature.
