Same thing works in this game. You could quickly glance over your shoulder and whatnot without turning your weapon away from the front.

when you are moving on foot, but suddenly you are under fire.
you running hardly at cover, while moving to cover, look around, and see where shooter is.
also you can use stereo audio channels to determine where shooter is.
2.
on foot...yes.
you are following road, but you may don't want turn your body because you may become little slow, because turning your body means change direction you walk toward.
basically freelook is, look around. once you get used to it, you can find it very convenient.
i ALLWAYS rebind the keys to a layout i use for almost 14 years now so i dont know. Also a mouse with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of Buttons helps alot too.
