21:9 Support? New Monitor Suggestions Chime In!
I have been researching the hell out of monitors, I want to upgrade from my 4k 60hz to something actually playable but need some opinions or advice from those who may have these monitors below. I am tired of getting crap FPS and finally have accepted that 4k gaming is not possible with a single 1080 ti.

I have narrowed it down to two monitors. The Alienware AW‑18DW, which is 3440x1440 120hz

or the Asus PG279Q, which is a lower 2560x1440 but 165hz. The Asus is a few years old and the AW is newer, plus ultrawide.

So my question is, with a 1080 ti can one even get 144fps out of the 165hz monitior on AAA titles? If I can't take advantage of the full refresh rate would something like the AW 120hz be more achievable for new games? I don't want to lower settings so yes maxed out.

I watched videos of greatly optimized games like BF1 with these monitors. Maxed out settings. With the AW he was getting an average of 100-115 fps, so gettings the most out of his 120hz. On the PG279Q with the same settings he wasn't getting 144-165 fps, so whats the point?

Any suggestions from those who have more experience please chime in. I have been playing on 60hz my whole life and am ready for the leap. Thanks

Awesome reply, thank you. I am leaning more towards the AW. Simply because even with the 2560x1440, I wouldn't be able to take full advantage of the 165 even 144hz.

Coming from a 60hz monitor and jumping to 120hz im sure will be a huge improvement and most games will be closer to the 120fps max than 144/165fps max.

The AW has a 4ms response time from what I have been reading and 2 years from now Im sure I will upgrade my GPU.

I was worried that if I only get something that can display 120hz, that I would be missing out on 165hz and all its glory. But if I can't even get a game to play at frames that high with todays hardware, without lowering settings which I think defeats the purpose, then 120hz is more realistic.

im using the acer x34 and would never go back to a 16:9. squad supports it wonderfully.

I don't know about any FOTM triple a shooters but i do have locked 100fps in quake champions at 3440x1440 and squad can vary 60-95 fps depending on the scene intensity. this is with an overclocked 1080

I also used to own a PG279Q and it had awful backlight bleed. had to return it. Make sure the alienware isnt a VA panel. Those tend to have ghosting issues in darker scenes.

i got an asus 27" 165hz gsync monitor.. that g sync is awesome, perfect for squad swinging fps.. I'll only watch for a gsync monitor in the future.. i believe that freesync is okay too, but i havnt tried it

The AW is an IPS panel, G-Sync 120hz ultrawide in 3440x1440. They say the gamma comes a little high out of the box so I may bite the bullet and get one of those monitor calibration tools like X-rite color munki for a 100 or so. Upgrading to something so nice, I would want to colors and gamma to be as close to perfect as possible.

Glad to hear that squad supports 21:9
