Squad
Game size & updates
I know this is Early Access and all, but is there any way the overall game size can be brought down? I've just spent 6 hours trying to figure out why I couldn't launch Squad, only to find the most recent update made it too big to fit on my SSD (not that Steam would tell me that). Does it really need to be 37GB!?

Not the devs fault you don't have enough space.

Kid at work is buying a 1 TB SSD. What was your question again?

All I'm saying is, 37GB is a lot. Most games don't come near that. I don't understand why Squad takes up as much space as it does. I even more don't understand why the community wants to be so passive aggressive about this question.

Puzzlement is probably a better description as 37 GB is not a lot. Most AAAs are bigger than that, Halo 5 was 50 GB for example.

But it's NOT triple A. Total War: WARHAMMER was less than Squad (only marginally), but that wasn't in Early Access. Squad will be getting larger, it wouldn't surprise me if it passes 50GB.

How come other games can fit the content Squad has in such a smaller size? Why is Squad so large? Is it just the level of detail in textures, the variety of assets, the map sizes, the detail in said maps, the scoundscape, or a more technical thing in that devs aren't prioritising file sizes / compression at the moment?

In short, yes. I think all the assets are made for 4k res.
It's pretty much all down to assets, rather than content. Total War for example has small assets because its mostly copy paste units (and if you zoom in on them you'll notice how laughably low res they are), so its hard to compare game file size. Skyrim is an old game, but you load in 4k res texture mods and boom 70+ GB.

Thanks for a decent answer. Steam Community is normally ♥♥♥♥♥.

There is some bloat in the game files, and eventually (hopefully) some of the layers systems will get reworked to reduce overall game size.

The game also uses pak files, and when updating, it will download the updates and slipstream them into your existing pak files (which is why a 2.6gb update needs more like 10-15gb free space to work)

It's an Unreal engine game, so expect the install to be somewhere in the region of 20-50 Gb regardless of the games developer and whether or not they are AAA or not.

Unreal 4 is a fat hog.
