i5-12400 4.4ghz vs i3-14100 4.7ghz
These 2 are near in price and can be used with the same Mainboard setups.

12400 has 6 core, about 10$ more, but 10% faster in games performance

14100 has 4 core, but bit faster Ghz.

Which would be better for Squad and Arma Reforger 4

i don't have a definitive answer, but for 12400 i would look for a b660 board with clock generator like asrock b660m riptide or msi mortar max. with some tweaking you can get it to 4.8 - 5ghz.

i would also take a look at 5700x3d if you can stretch your budget

To tweak some minor OC (not watercool), can I use cheap variant b660m (without RIPTIDE / Mortar heatsink)?

by default the multiplier is locked in 12400. if you use other boards i don't think you can increase the base clock by more than 3 mhz. that kind of minor oc isn't worthwhile. just leave it at stock if you can't buy those two boards.

also i think the 12400 operates at 4.0ghz in games, 14100f at 4.5ghz

I went to read about oc with the boards you suggest.
Apparently you will need ddr4 ram that reach 4400mhz which will cost 30%-60% more than 3200mhz. That price change will not be worth it considering they change only 5% fps.

hm no because for 12400, the system agent voltage is locked , and you need to increase it in order to reach higher speeds of ddr4 at gear 1. the highest speed i have read about is 3600 mbps. any 3200mbps kit will do for 12400.

if you are buying new ram too maybe ddr5 is worth looking at. asrock and MSI have b760m ddr5 boards with the same names that come with clock generators.
