Loosening the standards for the most bedrock of expectations is exactly why there are so many issues with teamwork and lack of comms today. When people start thinking that talking isnt expected then dont be surprised when every squad you join is a silent, disjointed mess.
I would just use the mic. The game becomes so much better when say you die and the enemy is infront of you "Enemy North Of my Position" Then a squad mate nearby can shoot that person and pick you up. Vs saying nothing or typing someone reading chat and getting rolled by that guy who killed you.
When I am squad leading I pretty much kick anyone that doesn't have a mic. You don't have to say anything its just more the ability to communicate when needed.
If you tell your SL there is an enemy behind him and he doesn't die for that no one is going to give a duck if you sound like a 8 year old who should be playing Fortnite.
Just get a mic and talk. You will enjoy the game waaaay more and meet new people.
