how to defend from hacking?
I have very little idea how hacking works, usually I just hack minor factions and use the Firewall defensive program on my systems. However I've been getting revolutions from being hacked even though I have Firewall on my home system. How do I stop this? My home system says it's detected a trace but won't let me respond to it and says I need to find its source. How do I find its source?

My advice is - just disable Penumbra DLC (unless you want to play the Umbral Choir faction). Hacking is not a fun addition to the game imo.

When you detect hacking you immediately start tracing it back. You can only block the hacking if you trace it all the way to the source. You don't get any input unless you actually manage the trace.

What CAN you do to defend? Honestly, as far as I'm aware, best you can do is just stack all the defensive programs you can around your capital.

how do I trace it back though? do I hack random nearby nodes until I find the source?

Put firewall on all systems adjacent to your home system. Make sure you have colonized all systems near your home system so that you can protect them.

Hacking really isn't designed to be used by anyone aside from Umbral Choir.

It's automatic you don't have to do anything. If/when you detect an enemy hack you'll automatically start tracing it - and if you finish the trace before the hack is finished you'll get the option to stop it (or not, if you were playing some MP game and wanted to pretend you didn't know someone was hacking you).
Tracing is also a lot faster than the actual hacking so the theory is that you should do really long hackings to minimize the chance of tracing catching you.

I don't understand, tracing is faster than hacking so you should make longer hack routes? won't that let the trace finish faster since it's faster by default?

If the trace has to go back through a bunch of detour systems it's hoped it won't catch the hack in time if by the time it reaches the enemy system it's only a couple turns left and you spent like 10 turns going around.
But personally, that'd make it take a lot lot longer so I just gamble on the shortest routes.

ah I understand, so if I route the hack through a bunch of other nodes the trace will only begin once the hack starts moving directly towards the destination node?

I believe it can start whenever you pass through any system owned by another empire.
