What does Warp Drive from the Rare Earth Forms tech do?

Allows your ships to move outside of hyperlanes if there's no other path or it's somehow quicker.

I see this answer given everywhere I look. So, I must be a big dumb dummy, but I cannot for the life of me get a ship to move outside a star lane after researching Rare Earth Foams. Is there a hotkey for this or something? Do I need to upgrade my ship to include the warpdrive or does it automatically get installed on preexisting ships?

I just want to bypass a pirate in 1 system by "going offroad". I've even tried sending a probe ahead of me to carve a path. Still can't travel but by starlane.

This is by design. To move a fleet, you *must* click on a system. Once you've clicked on that system, the game plots a route that gets you there as fast as possible - warp, starlane, or some combination of the two.

Even with warp, you can't choose just any ole path. You can't just click on some bit of space, and go there - which means you can't just take a little detour to bypass a pirate.

It let you travel outside the string in straight line to destination if it is faster or have no other way to reach it. In ES1, you can force warp drive by Ctrl + Right click on your destination and it will enter warp drive. Course can't be change until it reach. In ES2, there doesn't seem a way to force them to use warp drive for now. I wish they add it back since Vodyani start with quest that you need to destroy pirate fleet and it come way too early. If it spawn at chokepoint, you just get block out of the game.
