I dont understand the tracing back part of hacking.
When I go to hack someone it always says it is tracing back the hack. So whenever I hack it never works. How exactly do I stop this?

Traces happen when you start hacking a node with a dfensive program. The easiest way to avoid it is to path around the protected nodes, though this isn't always possible.

You can also use longer paths. Since the trace only starts when you arrive at the protected node, longer paths can give you more time to finish the hack.

Once you have hacked the protected node, create a backdoor or sanctuary there. This allows you to start new hacks from the protected node.

I cant tell you how it works, but at least from observation it seems to depend of faction and chance.
I played (started) 2 games with the UC.
The first there were Sophons near me and while i was able to get a few sanctuarys down before they colonised i was not able to hack i single planet.
Every attempt (even those that would only take 3 turns) were traced back and i was eventually found and blackmailed to stop, effectivly crippling me.
Later i got a hack on their main planet even though the hack took 9 turns and went through 3 of their systems.
The second one were against Horatio and it was incredibly easy. he never noticed anything, no matter how many times i hacked him. only after i had over 10 sleepers over 4 systems did he finally trace me back.

Sooo.... Random chance depending on Science maybe ?
If thath is the case i would love to have a visual representation of it. for every connection on the map a percent chance per turn to be traced back while hacking it or something

I am absolutely baffled by the new Penumbra.
I started a new game, I ended up in the outer edge of a constellation, a minor faction being my only adjacent spot. Every time I hack, I run into their defensive program, and I've managed to get through 1 in 10 times. And even then I had no idea what to do.

I don't get it. How am I supposed to build sanctuaries? What how should I use the hacking? I literally do not understand the actual purpose of this faction, and the worthless tutorial just tells me what I can do, not what I should be doing.

With pirates and minor factions you need to raise your standing with them first to be able to hack through their nodes without issues.

There's a defence hack called tracing, which can be placed on any colonized planet to see hacks from other nations passing through your space. The only way to stop that is to create a backdoor into that node, making future hacks passing through it not be detectable--unless the backdoor is compromised.

I recommend getting the accelerator hack (through research) it hacks nodes 30% quicker (when the hack reaches the destination) allowing you to bypass the encryption defence hack which reduces the speed of your hack on a node they own and hacking from a longer distance can help with the traces, however it will take longer

Try the hotfixes being tested on the branch mentioned in this thread, among the many improvements we're making to Penumbra to make hacking more accessible!
