Co-Op Play?
Thinking about buying this for a friend and I. Can we play with just us? Or do you have to play a "Full" multiplayer game with 8 people? Do you start close to each other?

One particular detail is that you can start with just you and your friend , have up to 6 more AI bots "filling" spots and make it public. As people see your public game listed they can hop in at the turn you are currently playing and take the spot of a previous AI Player.

you can play with your friend and ai alone. empire starts are pre set up at the set up screen. if you wants teams, if you want them to be close or far away and so on. Up to you what you want to do.

I think the official answer can be really misleading.

When you start a new game, you can decide to check the option to have empires start "All close to each other".

This means you, the AIs, everyone. ALL players.

When you start a new game, there is NO OPTION TO HAVE TEAMS. Yeah, you read that well. Despite numerous games of the genre with teams at the start (the whole Civilization series for instance), here you don't have that. So you could still "cheat" and make an alliance during the game with your buddies; just that the AI won't be in team.

Your options for coop are then limited and just as in a "pretend game".

I am sorry if I turn this in a negative way, but I am really bothered by this. I already mentioned that in the first Endless Space game, I can't bring my friends with me to play this, I need coop, and for that I need teams.

How did people imagine coop here? by pretending we are in teams? by removing that ability from AI and have a so great advantage on them?

I won't even bother to purchase a next ES game until there is coop confirmed in teams. And can't make my friends play this one, unfortunately.
