I never bothered with the tutorial so idk to what you're referring but there are upgrades on troops as well as different troop compositions, and on top of that some are just better or worse at ground battles. If you meant all infantry upgraded to lvl 3, were you playing the Sophons? Because they absolutely SUCK in ground combat.
Here is a wiki with some stats
http://endless-space-2.wikia.com/wiki/The_Cravers
http://endless-space-2.wikia.com/wiki/The_Sophons
You will notice for instance Cravers automatically get +10% health and Sophons get -20% health on troops. It also depends on what different tactics are being used. If you tried to blitzkrieg you way in that also drops a significant amount of health, and there's defense tactics like bombardment etc. What exactly did you do?
Unit upgrades
Can be done via military screen. And through certain technologies. And system improvements.
Manpower deployment limit
Limits how many troops can fight at a time. Even if you have 10000 troops available and your deployment limit is 1000 than you can only use 1000 at a time.
Unit composition
This is a rock, paper, scissors kind of a deal. Infantry counters Jet fighters, Tanks counter Infantry and Jets counter Tanks.
Military tactics
ATTACKER
Preemptive bombing is good to use if your manpowet is lower than your deployment limit.
Guerilla is best overall imo if you have enough manpower and dont want to ruin the system imptrovememts.
Blitz is good to finish the invasion when enemy has low manpower. Also good to counter conscription.
DEFENDER
Conscription will instantly turn 1 population into 175 manpower and increase deployment limit on that turn by 175. Good to use when low on mp.
Protect system will increase defenses. Best if you have enough manpower.
Tactical surrender will increass tjhe time it takes for the oponent to take full control over system and gives you bonuses whem you move to retake it.
Also there is a tech in military that gives Titanium slugs mod for ships that destroys manpower on system you are sieging with your ships every turn.
Usually 1 point defense ship is perfect for the job, ofc en masse.
Like diminishing -1100 troops per turn.
