How exactly do Trade Routes work?
I know you build a Headquarters in one system and a Subsidary in another to form Routes, and that they have to be connected via star lane or wormhole, but do systems in between the HQ and Subsidary have any impact on income?

Short answer yes. Every system between HQ and subsidiary, your empire or another's, generates trade. Although I have also found that every system also generates a fraction of income in an empire you have trade agreement with regardless of connection. Also the distance plays a large role in income.

Yeah, looks like that's from when they were first being implemented, lots of stuff is different lol. Mainly considering this cause I want to get into Lumeris, and I've heard they're pretty dependant on trade.
