I considered Amplitude to be a foremost 4x developer for the past few years. But this failure to understand privacy and respect privacy is going to make me re-evaluate my support for them. What a bummer.
What the hell are you talking about? We are talking about Gamesight and Red Shell here. If you have any counterpoint to those, then feel free to elaborate your points. If you think that the link that I've shared is inappropriate / irrelevant, then feel free to point it out again.
What does any of the above got to do with my profile being private? If there's anything, it's exactly because I care of privacy that I set my profile private. There are peoples who do care about privacy and we don't need to bare our shirts for everyone to see just so that some developers could sell a few more copies of games.
If a game cannot sell due to peoples setting their profiles to private, then don't you think the fault is laying somewhere else? Creating more and more invasive profiling tools is not the solution. From DRM to rootkit to spyware, the games industry was littered by plenty of boogie man attempts to increase sales that ended up harming the customer. This latest tool above is nothing more than another one in those long lists no matter how much we try to downplay its harm.
I've been enjoying the Endless series a lot and I've gotten a lot of value out of my money. And I do wish that Amplitude could continue to stay successful, so I could continue to play Endless Space III, IV, V; Endless Legend V, VI, VII; etc in the future.
But we need to learn how to call a spade a spade. Don't sacrifice the privacy of your customers at the altar of another few more sales. It's just not worth it.
@Grumpy Old Man, feel free to convince me to change my mind again. I'll tried to keep my mind as open as possible.
Well, I do not like spyware/marketingware & so on.
If it ONLY checks in which country you are, I would say I might accept (may be usefull to know if they need to translate in other language for example)
But if it can pinpoint my city/adress and more : I am totaly against it. (well, even if amazon can clearly know where they deliver all the stuff they sell xD)
