Fortune of Fortune, my starting planet ended up being on the hyperspace warp connection to the middle section. As soon as I got the tech to unlock those warp lanes, I could start populating that entire middle constellation utterly uncontested while the other groups in my starting galexy were fighting each other for territory. Very lucky starting position to be able to capitalize on that.
Interestingly, of the 4 other groups that started in my half of the map, Vodyoni and Sophan started right next to each other, with Horatio just 2 hops away. Me and the Unfallen were off elsewhere in the galexy... and the Unfallen did litterally nothing but turtle on their home planet until I came and just put them out of their missery.
