What do you need to research to design military ships?

I know it's probably obvious to everyone else, but I can't figure it out. I've about finished the first two layers of military research, and I still can't do anything but a colony and explorer hull. Thanks in advance for any help.

Check techs in the EMPIRE-development-area with little rocket-ship symbols. It's the left side of the circle.

Military research is for stuff that your ships can be equipped with, command-points, doomsday-devices and military buildings.

It's on the left of the tech tree, expansion I think it's called. It uses the same symbol as the military tab.
