How do I get more heroes?

So I am quite a ways into a game now(turn 58 and mostly all of tier 2 and some of tier 3 research done), and cannot figure out how I obtain more heroes. If I remember right in the first one you could basically buy them, but on this one I see no such thing anywhere. I need one for my fleets dangit.

So I finally got one after building the academy in my home system. Are they only obtainable through events?

Through the academy you get them after a certain time (watch the progress bar).

But you can buy a few also on the marketplace (3rd stage tech) just keep looking.

Not sure about other factions but United Empire has an early faction quest that lets you choose your second hero.

The Academy is an anomaly on a shattered/broken/uncolonizable planet somewhere in some random system every game. Once you discover that you'll start accruing points toward getting another hero. The "Academy" building is really like an Academy embassy; it let's you start accruing points even if you haven't discovered the location of the actual Academy. It's not wasted production if you built it but also discovered the physical location soon after, as the building speeds up how quickly you get more heroes (I think it's like 20% faster...or a 20% discount).

How do I NOT get more heroes? I don't want that sneaky Academy hoisting spies with their own agenda on me wether I want them or not.

I have same problem as OP, and maybe more. I can't buy heroes from Marketplace, because I don't see a list of them. I'm into turn 70-ish with all but 1 (chameleon Spaces) in Tier3 Economy and Trade Technologies researched. Specifically, I have Impactless Sites researched, the one that should have "open access to Mercenaries & Heroes".

I said "maybe more" because I don't see a list of heroes even when I click on the Heroes heading in Marketplace. In fact, I don't see the list of buyable things change in Marketplace when I click on the other headings (Luxuries & Ships). The headings are lighted (not greyed out) and when I click on them I can hear the UI click sound. But no matter which heading I click on. I only see a list of the Strategics. So all I can buy are Strategics & yes, I bought some Adamantian sucessfully just to be sure it works. Lastly, where there should be a graph, I only see "no data available". It's been like that since Turn 1

To be fair, this is only my 2nd playthrough, so I'm guessing I'm just being a noob. Probably I need to research something or turn something on somewhere to make the Marketplace work like it used to in my 1st playthru. I can sell stuff afterall. So why can't I buy heroes like I bought Adamantians?

If you don't see any heroes at trhe marketplace, despite possessing the necessary technology, then maybe no heroes are currently for sale

Then why does the heading say "HEROES(3)" ?
I 've been clicking on that heading since "HEADING(1)" or about 30-ish turns ago.
Does "LUXURIES(10), SHIPS(20)" also mean there are no luxuries or ships for sale?
Yes, those numbers do change.

When you get offered a new Hero, I think that you get offered a choice between several (3 I think normally) Heros with somewhat different backgrounds, inmtial skills, reilgious and/or political affliations, as well as possibly belonging to other Races besides your own. Later in the game, the starting levels may also be higher than 1 as well, so you will have some skill points to allocate as well.You will have to decide which one of them to choose. You can also use these Heros as governors of Star Systems where you have at least one colony (multiple colonies can probably make use of their skills more often or better). Your 2nd choice is to assign them to a ship/fleet to either boost it's exploration abilities or it's military abilities, or other abilities (maybe).

hmm, thanks for trying but that doesn't answer my questions at all.
I didn't ask about how to use heroes. I know how to use them. I have 2 of them already (level 7 and level 6)

I am asking about why Marketplace doesn't show a list of them when its HEROES heading indicate there are 3 available for sale. Before you ask, yes I have researched "Impactless Sites". I did mention that earlier.

I have a similar problem. I bought 4 heroes from marketplace, all tech researched etc. The suddenly I noticed that "heroes" tab is grayed out and inaccessible, despite the fact that I've used it prior. Is there a cap? I currently have a total of 9. It's really bumming me out, because I'm about to win the game and want to grab some extra achievements and play around with hero min/max strategies.

Edit: I have an entire tech wheel researched and control 75% of galaxy
