I had a Sophon playthrough where I focused on energy weapons as I discovered high performance kinetic modules exploring.
Also the AI seem less prone to just default to missile boats now after the latest significant update, used to be before pretty much every pirate you met early on used missiles. Now most use a mixture of energy pulses and flak defense.
Having to depend on kinetic to defend against missiles as standard is not something you're forced into doing as much now.
If you find a good flak damage projectile while exploring, then you can just stack that on some support ships. Then research whatever you want for your offensive ships.
So a singular standard kinetic weapon on a large ship will actually provide much more missile defense than a couple of small ships with more resource advanced kinectic weapons.
I managed to get both Titan and Hyper weapon types early on after trading with the Sophons.
Weapon loadout though, I primarily build beams and missiles. It just fits my playstyle best due to my preference of long range engagement tactics and increased firepower traits in the initial salvos of a fight.
Which weapons you want for specific encounters depends on your enemies. If they focus more on defense against energy, you want projectiles. If they focus more on defense against projectiles, you want lazorz. AI-opponents will have mixed layouts in their forces though, so I tend to build ships with both energy- and projectile-based weaponry and defenses (except reavers).
bottom-line is there is no overall best weapon-type.
