How to gain influence?

Hey guys! I'm new here... sorry if it's a dumb question, but I've seen on the diplomatic relation, this influence bar.. what do I have to do to make the influence bar go to the right? (Meaning.. well.. in my favour?)

Develop influence-generating technologies (the purple ones) and switch any planet that doesn't have a specific bonus (like sterile for dust generation, hot for industry, cold for science, etc.) into an influence producing world. You can also shuffle populations around to exploit minor races that generate influence but that's generally a piddly amount.

Sorry I wrote the question wrong.. I meant influence in terms of empires, like to influence an impire... I'll edit the question later.. Sorry!
