HELP! New player confused about Food Conversion????
I am about 380 turns into a wonderful game as United Empire when I notice a lot of my systems are becoming unhappy out of nowhere.

I click on these system and they all say that there is 0 food being produced and a big issue when examining further is that they are losing thousands of units of food to something called Food Conversion.

This is not food consumption nor is it food turning into manpower as those are both listed but the numbers are reasonable. I have researched and applied tons of food producing tech to these systems and even terraformed most of the planets in my empire to the nicest versions of planets that support tons of food.

It also cannot be the tech that converts excess food to industry because I have not yet researched that,

What is Food Conversion and why am I losing an entire empire's worth of food to it!!!!

Do you have any laws that would be doing that? Also systems in mutiny or low happiness have penalties to food

No laws that effect food production and the loss of food from unhappiness is also listed separately. It is a very specific thing called Food Conversion and it is separate from all those other food loss sources.

My first thought was one of those techs that convert food > something else. But you say you haven’t even researched those.

Perhaps the systems have been set to prioritize something *other* than food?

Are there so many new colonies being formed, that all available food is in transit to the new colonies?

Can you maybe upload your save somewhere (Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive...) and post a link to it? I'm curious what it might be but I'd need to see the problem myself.

If you could provide a screenshot of the system in question with the tooltip mouse over of the food consumption

Also in the system view beside the dust icon is a building icon. Click that and it will show all buildings that have been built. That might also show something

One improbable cause could be that a certain temporary event the raises happiness a lot ran out, causing a drop in happiness of -25.

there is a military biulding that takes 20% food and creates more military units in stockpile. It may be bugged? I only built one of those in a system and then won a research victory. Did you build them everywhere? Just wondering.

I also met this food-industry conversion problem.
The end-game conversion tech was not researched,
but some of my systems with max pop had been converting excess food to ind.

I know this thread is old but I found it through searching for this issue and if anyone else finds this:

It is due to Sleeper(s) in your system because the system got hacked.

You need to activate Sleeper Reintegration under Domestic Surveillance or some other way to get rid of Sleepers.

in 2017 there were no Sleepers, DLC with them came out later

Oh, I see. But with the current version of the game this happened to me and it disappeared once I used Sleeper Reintegration.
