How much extra damage is a critical hit?
I have a choice between 19 DPS + 6% CC or 20 DPS.

If Cr Damage = 105%, then option 1 net DPS = (0.06 * 19 * 1.05) + (0.94 * 19) = 19.057 DPS
If Cr Damage = 110%, then option 1 net DPS = 19.114 DPS
If Cr Damage = 125%, then option 1 net DPS = 19.285 DPS
If Cr Damage = 150%, then option 1 net DPS = 19.57 DPS
If Cr Damage = 200%, then option 1 net DPS = 20.14
If Cr Damage = 250%, then option 1 net DPS = 20.71

Althought, it does not really seem to matter much if you do 19.1 or 20.7 DPS, when you have a hero with 120% Extra Fleet Damage, 30% Proj Damage boost support module, 4 Guns per ship and 10 ships in a fleet, the difference over a battle using Long-Long-Medium tactics effectively becomes doing some unknown amount from 3583 DPS to 3877 DPS with option 1 to always getting 3744 DPS with option 2.

I cannot determine which is better without knowing how much extra damage a Critical hit represents.

Given these conditions, I believe even 6% critical chance should be a lot better, as roughly every 17th shot should do full damage, ignoring any defense mitigation.

Since crits ignore defense the optimal offense is to maximize crits, and the optimal defense is to stack raw ship health (over armor or shields).

This defence is not optimal when you can win even with less maximum health because higher defences will left your ships with more % health making repairs cheaper/shorter.
There is no perfect solution.

If were fighting the AI maybe. But alpha strie is king, and you should have absolute maximum crit chance you can get as early as possible. At that point any ship you face off agaisnt that doesn't have egregious HP will die before it has a chance to deal significant damage to anyway.

Player battles basically devolve into "who has better DPS modules" with a little bit of rock paper scissors.

With a healthy side of who has more gun slots!

Defenses are worth far less sadly.
