Is it just me, or is this a massive waste of 40 trait points? As far as I can tell, all it does is show the end of the line of adjacent travel paths...so...why the heck is this possibly worth 40 points?

Probably to make it seem like Sophons aren't so weak. Inflate the value of one of the useless traits Sophons get to make it look like they have a comparable trait value to the other factions, when in reality all they have is a small science boost and a fluff ability like pathfinder.

It is a massive waste of point for other faction consider you can slap two Hyperium Probe modules on your explorer ship and see the next node, let alone Probe them.

Considering Amoeba had one of the best faction traits in the game in ES1 ( start with map fully revealed)... I suppose they needed some kind of map ability to hold up and go "look! woooowwww!"
